Malta International Airport (MLA) at Luqa is the islands' only airport, and nothing on the main island is far from it. Valletta is about 8 km away, typically 15 to 25 minutes by car, while St Julian's and Sliema take 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Island routes and drive times

Gozo is reached by the Gozo Channel car ferry from Cirkewwa to Mgarr, a crossing of about 25 minutes; the car and chauffeur can travel on the ferry, or a second car can meet you on Gozo. Book island-hopping days as an hourly booking, three hours minimum.

Driving realities: left-hand traffic and Valletta access

Malta drives on the left, a legacy of British rule. The island is small but densely built, so the arterial roads between Luqa, Marsa, Birkirkara and the Sliema coast carry heavy traffic for much of the day, and a 12 km journey can take longer than the distance suggests. Valletta operates a Controlled Vehicular Access (CVA) system that charges vehicles entering the city at set hours; when a trip enters the CVA zone, the charge is added to the fare at the actual amount, as are gratuity and airport parking.

Summer from June to September is hot and busy, with village festas nearly every weekend and fireworks that close streets in the host towns. Carnival fills Valletta and Floriana in February, and the Malta International Fireworks Festival lights the Grand Harbour, usually in late April.
