Curacao drives on the right. The Queen Juliana Bridge carries road traffic high over St Anna Bay between Otrobanda and Punda, while the floating Queen Emma pontoon bridge is for pedestrians only, so crossing the harbour by car means the high bridge or the ring road. Traffic in Willemstad builds at the morning and late-afternoon commute and around the cruise piers on busy ship days. Roads to the western tip are narrow in places.

The island lies outside the main hurricane belt, and the climate is dry and warm all year. Carnival is the biggest event, with parades from January and the Gran Marcha in the weeks before Lent, when central routes close. Curacao Day falls on 2 July and King's Day on 27 April.
