LAX: terminals and where your chauffeur picks you up

Los Angeles International has nine passenger terminals arranged in a horseshoe around the Central Terminal Area: Terminals 1 to 8 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal between Terminals 3 and 4. Drive times from LAX

LAX sits on the coast in Westchester, so time depends on which way you head and when:

Weekday peaks run roughly 7 to 10 am and 3 to 7 pm. An evening arrival from Asia or Europe often lands just in time for the worst of it, which is one reason the 60-minute international wait starts at actual landing.

Burbank, Long Beach, John Wayne and Van Nuys

Los Angeles is a multi-airport region, and the right one can save an hour:

• Hollywood Burbank Airport is small and quick, about 12 miles from Hollywood and a few minutes from the Burbank studio lots. It suits the Valley, Glendale and Pasadena.
• Long Beach Airport serves the South Bay and Long Beach; see our Long Beach page.
• John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana serves Irvine, Newport Beach and the rest of Orange County; see Irvine.
• Van Nuys Airport is one of the busiest general aviation fields in the United States. FBOs there include Signature, Clay Lacy Aviation and Jet Aviation. Customs and entry for international arrivals

Most long-haul flights arrive at the Tom Bradley International Terminal, with some international carriers at Terminals 2, 4, 5 and 7. Passengers clear US Customs and Border Protection before reaching baggage claim. Visitors travelling under the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA before boarding; Global Entry members and users of the Mobile Passport Control app usually move faster. Queue times vary widely with the arrival bank, and a wave of Asian widebodies between about 6 and 9 am can mean a long wait. Many of these have a covered porte-cochere where the valet team lets pre-arranged cars wait for a few minutes; residential canyons are another matter, so give us the gate code and whether a large vehicle can turn at the top.

Stadiums, arenas and red-carpet venues

• SoFi Stadium and the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, about 3 miles from LAX: NFL football, Clippers basketball and stadium concerts.

• Dodger Stadium in Chavez Ravine.
• The Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
• Hollywood Bowl and the Greek Theatre for summer concerts.

• Los Angeles Convention Center next to LA Live for trade shows and the Auto Show.

Cruise terminals at San Pedro and Long Beach

Two terminals handle most Southern California cruise traffic. The World Cruise Center at the Port of Los Angeles is in San Pedro, about 25 miles from downtown and 20 miles from LAX, usually 30 to 60 minutes. The Long Beach Cruise Terminal sits next to the Queen Mary, a little closer to Orange County. On embarkation days the approach roads fill between 10 am and 1 pm; on disembarkation mornings your pickup is timed to your group's release. Union Station and rail arrivals

Los Angeles Union Station, opened in 1939, is the rail hub for Southern California. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner runs from here to San Diego and Santa Barbara, and the Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited long-distance trains terminate here. Metrolink commuter trains and the Metro subway also meet at the station. Cars drive on the right. The region runs on freeways: the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass, the 10 between Santa Monica and downtown, the 101 through Hollywood and the 110 to the harbour. Most freeways are toll-free, but the Metro ExpressLanes on the I-10 and I-110 and the Orange County toll roads (the 73, 133, 241 and 261) charge electronically.
