Germany's long-haul network centres on two hubs. Frankfurt Airport handles its flights through Terminals 1 and 2, linked by the SkyLine people mover, while Munich Airport splits traffic between Terminal 1 and the Terminal 2 complex. How long does a German intercity transfer take?

Much of the Autobahn network has no general speed limit, but a recommended 130 km/h applies, and roadworks and lorry traffic set the real pace. Cars pay no motorway tolls in Germany.

Intercity trains are a strong alternative between hubs, and chauffeurs regularly meet travellers at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, Munich Hauptbahnhof and Berlin Hauptbahnhof for the last leg.

Cross-border runs are common from the German hubs. Munich to Innsbruck or Zurich, Frankfurt to Luxembourg or Strasbourg and Düsseldorf to Amsterdam or Brussels are all realistic single-day transfers inside Schengen, with no border stop in normal conditions. Austria and Switzerland require a motorway vignette on the vehicle, which is a matter for the operator. When a German meeting runs long, the included waiting on your booking is 15 minutes for a standard pickup, after which waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks, so an open-ended board session is usually better booked by the hour.

Driving rules, emission zones and the trade-fair calendar

Traffic keeps right, and winter tyres are required whenever conditions are wintry. Several cities, including Berlin inside the S-Bahn ring and Stuttgart, keep an Umweltzone, a low-emission zone that only vehicles with the green sticker may enter. Parts of central Hamburg and Munich's Altstadt also restrict through traffic.

Germany's calendar is driven by trade fairs, and hotel rates and car demand follow them closely.
