Journey times in Guatemala depend on the hour as much as the distance. Tikal is best reached by flying to Flores and booking a separate transfer there, because the road trip from the capital takes roughly 8-10 hours. The Pan-American Highway (CA-1) toward the highlands winds through mountains and can be slow behind trucks, and the stretch between Guatemala City and Antigua via the Carretera Interamericana and San Lucas climbs steeply. The Palín-Escuintla highway to the Pacific is a toll road. Travelling in daylight on longer highland routes is common practice. Parking at La Aurora and gratuity are added at the actual amount.

The dry season runs roughly November to April and is the main tourist period; the rainy season runs roughly May to October, with afternoon downpours and occasional landslides on mountain roads. Semana Santa in March or April is the biggest event of the year, especially in Antigua, where processions over carpets of coloured sawdust close the cobbled streets and hotels fill months ahead. Independence Day on 15 September brings torch-relay runners onto the highways, and All Saints' Day on 1 November features the giant kites of Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez.
