Galeao International: terminal and pickup
Galeao International Airport (GIG) sits on Ilha do Governador in the north of the city. All scheduled passenger flights currently use Terminal 2; Terminal 1 has been largely out of passenger service since 2016. International arrivals clear Federal Police immigration and Receita Federal customs before reaching the public hall.

Santos Dumont: the downtown airport
Santos Dumont (SDU) is on the edge of Guanabara Bay in Centro, next to the Museu de Arte Moderna. It handles domestic flights, including the frequent shuttle to Sao Paulo's Congonhas. It is close to everything: Centro offices are 5 to 15 minutes away and Copacabana usually 20 to 35 minutes along the Aterro. Because SDU flights are domestic, the included wait is 30 minutes from actual landing. Business travellers often fly into Santos Dumont from Sao Paulo for a single day of meetings and book a car for the whole visit.
Visas and arrival formalities
Since 10 April 2025, citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia need an electronic visa to enter Brazil, and the requirement remains in force in 2026. Apply online well before departure through the channel published by Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Most EU and UK citizens can still visit without a visa for short stays. Arriving passengers pass immigration, collect bags, then go through customs, where the red and green channels apply. Queues at Galeao are longest when several European flights land together in the early morning, one reason the 60-minute international wait starts from actual landing.

Business districts: Centro, Porto Maravilha and Barra

Driving and travelling safely in Rio
Brazil drives on the right. Rio has no congestion charge or plate-rotation scheme, but traffic on the Linha Vermelha, Linha Amarela and Avenida Brasil is heavy at peaks, and tropical downpours cause flash flooding on low roads. Leaving Rio: timing the return to the airport
For an international departure from Galeao, most Zona Sul guests leave the hotel three to three and a half hours before the flight. That covers a 40 to 70 minute drive plus check-in, Federal Police exit control and security, which can be slow when several evening flights to Europe and North America depart close together. From Barra da Tijuca, add another 20 to 30 minutes. Domestic flights from Santos Dumont need far less margin: leaving Copacabana 90 minutes before departure is usually enough outside rush hour. The fixed fare is the same whenever you leave, so building in a buffer costs nothing extra. If your flight is cancelled or retimed before pickup, message dispatch and the car moves with it.
Private aviation and helicopter transfers
