Tocumen International Airport (PTY), about 24 km east of Panama City, is the country's international hub and a major connecting point for the Americas. Terminal 1 and the newer Terminal 2 both handle international flights, so check which one your airline uses. The drive to the banking district, Punta Pacifica or the Casco Viejo takes 30 to 60 minutes, usually via the Corredor Sur toll road along the bay. Chauffeurs track the flight and wait at the designated pickup area for pre-arranged transport; meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.

Driving realities: traffic, tolls and the seasons

Panama drives on the right. Panama City's traffic is among the heaviest in Central America at the morning and evening peaks, particularly on Via Espana, the Transistmica and the approaches to the Bridge of the Americas and the Centennial Bridge across the canal. The Corredor Sur and Corredor Norte toll expressways relieve some of it, and heavy tropical rain regularly slows the whole network.

The dry season runs roughly from mid-December to April and is the busiest period for visitors; the rainy season, from May to November, brings short afternoon storms. Carnival takes place in the four days before Ash Wednesday, with the biggest celebrations in Las Tablas and heavy traffic on the Pan-American Highway towards the Azuero peninsula. November is the month of patriotic holidays, with several national days including Independence from Colombia on 3 November and Independence from Spain on 28 November, bringing parades and road closures. Canal transits are a special case. Passengers joining or leaving a ship that transits the canal may board at the Amador cruise terminal or at Colon, and schedules can shift with lock slots, so give the ship name and let the desk track timing with you. Albrook airport (PAC), near the city centre, handles domestic flights to Bocas del Toro and the islands, and a transfer between Tocumen and Albrook takes roughly 30 to 50 minutes.
