Driving realities and the Adriatic season

Croatians drive on the right, and motorway sections are tolled at plazas or electronically, a fact worth knowing when you read a toll receipt. The coastal D8 road, the Jadranska magistrala, is scenic but slow, with long single-carriageway stretches behind coaches in July and August.

Dubrovnik's Old Town is pedestrian only, so a chauffeur sets you down at the Pile Gate or the Ploče Gate, and the Gruž port, where cruise ships berth, sits a few kilometres north-west of the walls.
