Pico y placa: what it means for your trip
Bogota restricts private cars by the last digit of the licence plate on weekdays from 6 am to 9 pm. Under the scheme in force in 2026, plates ending 1 to 5 may circulate on odd-numbered dates and plates ending 6 to 0 on even-numbered dates. A separate regional rule controls private cars entering the city on the main access corridors on holiday return days. Taxis and special-service vehicles have their own schedules. The dispatcher assigns an affiliate vehicle that is allowed to run at your pickup time, so the restriction is our problem, not yours. El Dorado International: arrival and pickup
El Dorado International Airport (BOG) sits about 15 km west of the business districts along Avenida El Dorado (Calle 26). It is one of Latin America's busiest airports, with international and domestic operations in the main terminal building. International arrivals clear Migracion Colombia, collect bags and pass customs before the public hall.

Colombia's entry formalities
Citizens of the United States, Canada, the UK and the EU do not need a visa for tourist or short business stays. Every foreign visitor must complete the free Check-MIG online form from Migracion Colombia within 72 hours before the flight. Many passport holders can use the automated Biomig gates on arrival, which shortens the immigration queue. Allow for customs X-ray of bags after the carousel.
Altitude and what it changes
Bogota sits at about 2,640 metres. Visitors arriving from sea level often feel tired or breathless on the first day. Plan an easy first evening, drink water, and consider a car rather than walking between meetings on the hills of Chapinero and Usaquen. Pack layers: temperatures often drop to single digits Celsius at night even when the midday sun feels strong. The city is cool all year, with afternoon rain common in April and May and again from October to November, when downpours slow every avenue.

Corferias hosts trade fairs through most of the year, and the Agora Bogota convention centre next to it handles congresses. Colombian public holidays that fall midweek are often moved to the following Monday, creating long weekends known as puentes. On those Fridays, outbound traffic on the Autopista Norte and the road to Melgar builds from early afternoon, and on the Monday evening the regional pico y placa rules control private cars returning to the city. If your stay spans a puente, book airport runs with extra margin and ask dispatch for a pickup outside the evening peak. December is especially busy, with holiday departures and Christmas light displays drawing crowds to Usaquen and the centre.
Day trips and intercity drives

Heading back to El Dorado
Leave plenty of time for an international departure. From the Chico, Parque 93 or Usaquen, most travellers leave three to three and a half hours before the flight, because the drive can take anywhere from 35 to 80 minutes and exit immigration, check-in and security at El Dorado are busiest in the late evening, when many flights to the United States and Europe depart. Staying near Ciudad Empresarial or Salitre cuts the drive to 15 to 30 minutes. For domestic flights, leaving two hours ahead from the north is usually enough. Remember that Check-MIG applies on departure as well as on arrival. The fixed fare does not change with the hour, so an early pickup costs nothing more.
