Crossing borders by car in Europe

Much of Europe sits inside the Schengen area, so a chauffeured drive from Geneva to Chamonix, from Nice to Monaco or from Milan to Lugano usually crosses a border without a routine passport stop. Carry your passport anyway: spot checks happen, Switzerland applies its own customs rules, and the United Kingdom and Ireland are outside Schengen. Geneva Airport has a French sector as well as the Swiss one, and the EuroAirport near Basel serves Switzerland, France and Germany from one terminal, so tell dispatch which side you land on.

January: the World Economic Forum in Davos and the peak of the Alpine ski season.
May: the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix usually fall in the same few weeks on the Riviera.
June: Art Basel usually runs in mid-June, and Wimbledon usually starts at the end of the month.
July and August: Mediterranean islands such as Mykonos, Ibiza and Capri are at capacity.

Low-emission and congestion zones

London's ULEZ and Congestion Charge, Milan's Area C and similar schemes in many cities apply to hired cars. They are not included in the fare and are charged at the actual amount, as set out by Transport for London and the other city authorities.
