Barcelona-El Prat: T1, T2 and how pickup works
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, run by Aena, is south-west of the city beside the Llobregat delta. It has two terminals about 4 km apart by road:
- T1, the larger modern terminal, used by most full-service and long-haul airlines, with separate Schengen and non-Schengen areas.
- T2, split into T2A, T2B and T2C, used mainly by low-cost carriers.
A free shuttle bus connects them, but the chauffeur needs your terminal, so give the flight number. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated area for pre-booked vehicles at that terminal, with the exact point on your confirmation. A meet and greet with a name board in the arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations (meet and greet).
The airport is about 13 to 16 km from Plaça de Catalunya. Allow 20 to 35 minutes via the C-31 or the Ronda Litoral, and 40 to 55 minutes at peak times or on MWC mornings. The metro line L9 Sud and the R2 Nord commuter train also serve the airport.
The Port of Barcelona: cruise terminals and transfers
The Port of Barcelona is one of the Mediterranean's busiest cruise ports and a frequent embarkation point. Most large ships berth at the Moll Adossat, a long breakwater quay south of Montjuïc, while smaller ships use terminals on the Moll de Barcelona near the World Trade Center, a short walk from the bottom of La Rambla. As of 2026 the port lists seven international cruise terminals (A, B, C, D, E, the MSC terminal and WTC Barcelona). Under the port's agreement with the city, the oldest Adossat terminals are due to be replaced by a single new public terminal, with demolition of Terminal C starting at the end of 2026 and completion planned for around 2030, leaving five terminals. Expect building works and changed walking routes during that time; the port authority publishes the current layout.
Practical timings: Moll Adossat to the Eixample is usually 15 to 25 minutes, and the port to El Prat about 15 to 25 minutes via the B-10 and the Ronda Litoral. On a changeover day, when thousands of passengers disembark between about 07:00 and 10:00, the port roads are slow; a pickup booked for a realistic time after the ship's clearance works better than an early one. The ZBE Rondes, superilles and driving in Barcelona
Barcelona drives on the right. The ZBE Rondes de Barcelona, the low-emission zone bounded roughly by the Ronda de Dalt and the Ronda Litoral, restricts vehicles without a DGT environmental label on weekdays from 07:00 to 20:00; the metropolitan authority (AMB) publishes the current rules and any changes to enforcement. In the centre, the city has converted many streets in the Eixample into superilles (superblocks) and green axes such as Consell de Cent, where through traffic is limited, and much of the Barri Gòtic and El Born is pedestrian. The chauffeur will stop at the closest legal point, which may be a short walk from a hotel in the old town.
The AP-7 motorway along the coast is no longer tolled on its Catalan section, but the C-32 south to Sitges and parts of the C-16 towards Manresa still carry tolls. The Rondas jam at the rush hours, and the Diagonal is slow at lunchtime.
Neighbourhoods, hotels and the 22@ district
- Eixample: the grid of Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya, with hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental, the Majestic and El Palace, and many corporate offices.
- Barri Gòtic and El Born: the medieval centre, mostly pedestrian.
- Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes: upper-city residential streets, consulates and international schools.
- Poblenou and 22@: the former industrial district turned technology and start-up hub.
- Diagonal Mar and the Fòrum: waterfront towers, the CCIB convention centre and beach hotels.
- Port Olímpic and Barceloneta: the Hotel Arts and the W Barcelona on the seafront.
Drive times within the city are short but unpredictable: Passeig de Gràcia to 22@ is about 15 to 25 minutes, and to Pedralbes 15 to 30 minutes.
Fira Gran Via, MWC and the event calendar
The Fira de Barcelona runs two venues: Fira Gran Via in L'Hospitalet, about 10 km from the airport, and Fira Montjuïc at Plaça d'Espanya. Mobile World Congress fills Fira Gran Via for four days, usually in late February or early March, and ISE brings the audiovisual industry there in February. During MWC, hotels as far as Sitges and Girona are booked, and approach roads to the halls are managed by the organisers. Check dates with Barcelona Turisme and the organisers before planning. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya at Montmeló is about 30 km north of the centre, typically 30 to 50 minutes outside race weekends.
Barcelona Sants and high-speed trains
Barcelona Sants is the main station for high-speed trains to Madrid (about 2 h 30 to 3 h) and for trains to France. Estació de França near El Born handles some regional and long-distance services. Pickups at Sants use the station's designated areas; the confirmation gives the exact point. Travelling on to Madrid by road instead is about 620 km, a full day's drive.
Day trips and intercity transfers from Barcelona
- Sitges: about 40 km, 35 to 50 minutes via the C-32.
- Montserrat: about 60 km, around 1 hour.
- Girona: about 100 km, 1 h to 1 h 15 via the AP-7.
- Tarragona: about 100 km, 1 h to 1 h 20.
- Costa Brava resorts such as S'Agaró or Lloret de Mar: about 80 to 110 km, 1 h to 1 h 30.
- Andorra la Vella: about 200 km, 2 h 30 to 3 h.
- Perpignan: about 190 km, around 2 hours.
- Valencia: about 350 km, 3 h 30 to 4 h.

Arriving in Barcelona: EES, ETIAS and Schengen
Spain is in Schengen. Flights from the UK, the Americas and Asia arrive at the non-Schengen area of T1, where non-EU visitors now go through the Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026: fingerprints and a facial image at the first Schengen entry, then digital records of entries and exits. ETIAS is not yet operating, and the EU has said it will announce its launch several months beforehand. Cruise passengers arriving from outside Schengen clear the same border checks at the port.

Timing a Barcelona departure
For an outbound flight, leave the Eixample about two hours before a Schengen departure from T1 or T2 and about three hours before a long-haul flight, adding time during MWC week, on summer Saturdays and on cruise changeover mornings when the Ronda Litoral fills with coaches and vans heading to the airport. Many cruise passengers spend a night in the city before or after the sailing; a hotel pickup with luggage in the morning, a stop at a sight such as the Sagrada Família, and a timed arrival at the terminal can be booked as one hourly block. Coach and car stopping near the Sagrada Família is controlled, so the chauffeur will use the nearest permitted street.
