Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP): pickup and waiting
AGP is Spain's fourth-busiest airport and sits about 8 km south-west of the centre. Most flights use Terminal 3, which is connected to Terminal 2 in one building; your boarding pass or airline notice confirms the terminal. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area signed from arrivals, where the chauffeur meets you with the car. Flights are tracked and the chauffeur is timed to the landing. Arrivals from outside Spain include 60 minutes of waiting, domestic flights from Madrid, Barcelona or the islands 30 minutes, then 15-minute blocks. West of the airport, the A-7 coast road runs through the resorts with roundabouts and traffic lights, while the AP-7 Autopista del Sol toll motorway runs parallel inland and is usually faster in summer. Traffic drives on the right.
The cruise port, ten minutes from the old town
The Port of Malaga is one of Spain's busier cruise calls and sits at the foot of the city centre, next to the Muelle Uno promenade and the Palmeral de las Sorpresas. Larger ships berth at the Levante cruise terminal on the eastern quay, and others at the El Palmeral terminal closer to town. The chauffeur meets you at the designated transport area for the terminal your ship uses, not at the gangway. Low-emission zone: what it means for your ride
Malaga has a low-emission zone (ZBE) covering much of the city inside the ring roads. As of 2026 the city fines only vehicles without a DGT environmental label that are registered outside the city, and it has announced wider restrictions for B-label vehicles from outside Malaga from 30 November 2026. An Andalusian court ruling in June 2026 questioned how the fines are applied, and the city appealed. For a passenger, the practical point is that local operators working the centre every day plan their vehicles around these rules. The historic centre around Calle Larios also has restricted-access streets, so drop-offs are at the nearest permitted corner.
Districts, hotels and venues
Visitors mostly stay in the Centro Historico around the cathedral, the Picasso Museum and Calle Larios, in Soho by the river, or along the seafront at La Malagueta, where the Gran Hotel Miramar faces the beach. The Palacio de Ferias y Congresos (FYCMA) on the western side of the city, towards the airport, hosts trade fairs and congresses; exhibitor teams book through corporate accounts for monthly invoicing and traveller profiles. La Rosaleda is the football stadium and the Martin Carpena arena hosts basketball and concerts. Maria Zambrano station and the AVE
Malaga Maria Zambrano is the main rail station, with AVE and other high-speed trains to Madrid in about 2 hours 40 minutes and Cercanias commuter lines to the airport and Fuengirola. The Malaga calendar
Holy Week (Semana Santa), in March or April, brings nightly processions that close streets across the centre. The Malaga Film Festival is usually held in March. The Feria de Malaga runs for about a week in August, with a daytime fair in the centre and a night fair at the Cortijo de Torres grounds. Summer also brings the Starlite festival in Marbella, usually July and August. Book ahead for all four, and see event transportation for multi-car plans.
EU entry rules in 2026
Travellers flying into AGP from the UK or elsewhere outside Schengen register with the EU Entry/Exit System, active since 12 October 2025 and fully in place since April 2026: a fingerprint scan and a photo at the first entry. Queues can be long on summer mornings, which is one reason international arrivals include 60 minutes of waiting. ETIAS has not launched; the EU has removed its late-2026 date and will announce the start months ahead. The EU travel portal has current details.
