EES, ETIAS and the Canary Islands
Gran Canaria is in Spain and in Schengen. Non-EU visitors on short stays, including the many UK travellers who fly direct, register in the EU Entry/Exit System at their first Schengen entry; the system has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamps with fingerprints and a facial photo. The ETIAS travel authorisation has not started, and the EU has not confirmed a date. The capital's districts
Las Palmas stretches for more than 10 km along a narrow isthmus and the coast to its south. Vegueta, the old colonial quarter, holds the Cathedral of Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón, and its lanes are best walked, so cars set down at the edge. Triana, next door, is the shopping street area. Ciudad Jardín has garden villas and the Hotel Santa Catalina in Doramas park. At the northern end, Santa Catalina park and the Guanarteme and Las Canteras district face Playa de Las Canteras, a city beach protected by a natural reef, with the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and congress centre at its southern tip. Most corporate visitors split time between Triana, the port area and the Mesa y López avenue.
Santa Catalina cruise terminal and the Puerto de la Luz
The Puerto de la Luz is one of Spain's busiest ports, handling containers, ferries and a heavy winter cruise schedule. Cruise ships berth at the Santa Catalina quay, close to Santa Catalina park and a 10-minute walk from Las Canteras. From the ship, the airport is about 25 to 35 minutes away, and a day circuit can cover Teror, the Roque Nublo viewpoint and the dunes of Maspalomas with a firm return time. The south: Maspalomas, Meloneras and Mogán
Most holiday hotels sit on the south coast. Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas border the protected dune field and lighthouse; Meloneras, just west, has larger resort hotels and a convention centre, and Puerto de Mogán, further along, is a small harbour town with canals. Golf travellers head for the courses at Maspalomas, Meloneras and Salobre. A sedan or SUV makes the LPA run comfortably; for a family or a golf group with bags, choose a Standard Black SUV.
Carnival, the ARC and other dates
- February or March: the Las Palmas Carnival, centred on Santa Catalina park, with its drag queen gala and big parades that close streets.
- November: the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers leaves the Las Palmas marina for the Caribbean, filling the port area with crews and families for about two weeks beforehand.
- Year-round: UD Las Palmas football at the Estadio de Gran Canaria and events at the Gran Canaria Arena in Siete Palmas.
- Trade fairs: at the INFECAR fairgrounds and the Alfredo Kraus congress centre.

Driving in Gran Canaria
Traffic keeps to the right and there are no motorway tolls. The GC-1 runs from the capital past the airport to the south and then on to Mogán; the GC-2 heads west along the north coast; and the GC-3 ring road bypasses the city. The Avenida Marítima along the eastern seafront jams at rush hour and during cruise-day peaks. Mountain roads into the interior, towards Tejeda and the Roque Nublo, are narrow and slow, often with weekend cyclists.
