Bilbao Airport (BIO): one terminal, one pickup routine
Bilbao Airport sits in Loiu, about 12 km north of the city over the Artxanda hills. Passengers use a single terminal, the white Santiago Calatrava building nicknamed La Paloma, with arrivals on the lower level. Entering Spain: EES now, ETIAS later
Travellers from outside the Schengen area, including UK, US and Canadian passport holders, meet the EU Entry/Exit System at passport control. EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: on your first entry you give fingerprints and a facial image instead of receiving a passport stamp, and a first-time registration can add time before baggage claim. Getxo cruise terminal and the Santurtzi ferry
Large cruise ships calling at Bilbao berth at the Getxo cruise terminal on the right bank of the Nervión estuary, about 15 km from the centre. The run into town takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes, or a little longer to the Guggenheim on a busy weekday morning. Cruise passengers usually choose between a direct transfer to the airport, a half-day with the car waiting in the city, or a full day to San Sebastian with a firm return time before all-aboard. The Port of Bilbao publishes each season's calls. Overnight ferries from the UK arrive on the opposite bank at Santurtzi, around 20 km from the city. Lines and ship agents moving crews or guests in volume should see cruise lines and ports and shipping crew change.

Driving realities: 30 km/h streets, a low-emission zone and tolls
Spain drives on the right. Most of Bilbao has a 30 km/h speed limit, and a low-emission zone covering Abando, Indautxu and Abandoibarra is active on weekday daytimes, open to vehicles with the DGT C, ECO or 0 label. A vehicle four model years old or younger normally carries one of those labels. The AP-8 towards San Sebastian and the AP-68 towards La Rioja are tolled motorways. Rain is frequent on the Cantabrian coast, so allow extra time on wet Friday evenings.
Rail: Abando, Concordia and the metro
Bilbao-Abando Indalecio Prieto is the main Renfe station for long-distance trains to Madrid, a journey of around five hours, and for local Cercanías lines. The narrow-gauge Concordia station next door serves coastal routes to Cantabria, and Euskotren and the Norman Foster-designed metro cover the suburbs.
