Bogotá El Dorado International Airport is Colombia's main hub, 15 km west of the city's financial districts at an altitude of about 2,600 m. Medellín's José María Córdova Airport is not in Medellín at all but in Rionegro, on a plateau east of the valley. Cartagena's Rafael Núñez Airport is close to the walled city, and Cali and Barranquilla handle much of the rest of the international traffic.

Colombia's Andean geography makes distances deceptive: a road can climb and descend 2,000 m between cities, so times are longer than kilometres suggest.

The Túnel de Oriente, opened in 2019, cut the Medellín airport road considerably compared with the older mountain route through Las Palmas, although chauffeurs still use Las Palmas when the tunnel road is congested.

Colombian cities also run car-free Sunday mornings, known as ciclovía, when major avenues in Bogotá close to traffic for cyclists and runners. A Sunday airport run is still possible, but the route may be longer than the direct avenue. Airport parking and gratuity are added to the fare at the actual amount.

Driving realities, pico y placa and the Colombian calendar

Colombia drives on the right. Intercity highways have frequent toll booths, called peajes. Bogotá and Medellín run pico y placa, a rule that restricts private cars from circulating at certain hours on certain days according to the last digit of the licence plate. Bogotá's rush hours are long and heavy, especially on Avenida El Dorado and the Autopista Norte.

The climate depends on altitude rather than season. Bogotá is cool all year, Medellín is spring-like, and the Caribbean coast is hot and humid. The main dry periods run from December to March and from June to August in much of the Andean region.
