Driving realities: winter, tolls and a crowded calendar

Canada drives on the right. The Toronto region has some of the worst congestion in North America on Highway 401, the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway, and Highway 407 ETR, an electronic toll highway across the northern suburbs, is often used to bypass it. In Montreal, bridge and tunnel works to and from the island cause regular delays. Winter matters everywhere: Quebec requires winter tires on passenger vehicles from 1 December to 15 March, and British Columbia requires winter tires or chains on designated highways, including the Sea-to-Sky route to Whistler, from 1 October to 30 April.

Events drive demand through the year. Winterlude fills Ottawa in February and the Quebec Winter Carnival runs in late January and February. The Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal moved to May from the 2026 season, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival usually spans late June and early July. The Calgary Stampede takes over Calgary for ten days in July, and the Toronto International Film Festival brings red carpets to King Street in September.
