Road conditions, seasons and dates to know

Honduras drives on the right. On Roatán, roads are narrow and steep, with sharp bends and potholes, and the descent into West Bay is one of the steepest stretches. The pavement gives way to rougher surfaces towards the East End. On cruise days, the roads around Coxen Hole and the port at Mahogany Bay slow down as tour vans leave together.

Hurricane season in the western Caribbean runs from June to November. The Bay Islands' wettest months are usually October to January. Semana Santa, in March or April, is the busiest holiday week, when mainland families fill the island. Punta Gorda, the oldest Garifuna settlement in Honduras, marks the Garifuna arrival on 12 April. Where visitors stay and go

Most guests stay at the resorts on West Bay beach or in the dive-shop village of West End, both near the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. French Harbour is the island's commercial port.
