Juan Manuel Galvez International sits beside Coxen Hole on the south-west of the island. It has a single, compact terminal handling international flights from the US and Canada and domestic hops from the mainland. After immigration and customs, you step outside to the arrivals kerb, where taxi drivers and tour agents gather. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area; the chauffeur messages you on landing and meets you there by name. A name-board greeting inside the arrivals area is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.

Cruise days at Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole
Roatan has two cruise ports about 8 km apart on the south coast: Mahogany Bay, east of Coxen Hole, and the Town Center port in Coxen Hole itself. West Bay, West End and the resort coast
West Bay has the island's best-known beach, lined with resorts and condominiums, and calm water inside the reef. West End, a short drive north, is the village of dive shops, bars and small hotels. French Harbour and the neighbouring Pristine Bay area host marinas, the larger supermarkets and a golf course. The East End, from Oak Ridge to Camp Bay, is quieter and greener, with fishing villages and remote villas. Many West Bay hotels sit on sandy lanes off the main road; the chauffeur drops at the resort gate or lobby.
Ferries, flights and the Bay Islands
The Roatan to La Ceiba ferry, run by the Galaxy Wave, crosses to the mainland in about 1.5 hours; boats to Utila also operate. Small domestic carriers fly from RTB to La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. Entry rules for Honduras in 2026
US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens can enter Honduras visa-free. Honduras is in the CA-4 zone with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, which shares one 90-day allowance across all four countries. Border officers expect a passport with six months of validity remaining. The Honduras Institute of Tourism publishes visitor information. The US dollar is widely accepted on Roatan alongside the lempira.
Safety, stated factually
The US State Department rates Honduras Level 3, reconsider travel, because of violent crime, and the advisory covers the country as a whole. Roatan and the Bay Islands are the most visited part of Honduras and see mainly opportunistic crime, but the practical advice holds: use a pre-arranged driver rather than unmarked cars, keep valuables out of sight on beaches, and avoid walking unlit stretches of road at night. Getting back to RTB for your flight
The terminal is small, but international departures bunch together at midday on Saturdays, and check-in plus the departure security line can take longer than the size of the building suggests. Plan to arrive about two and a half hours before a flight to the US or Canada. From West Bay that means leaving roughly three hours before departure; from the East End allow closer to three and a half. If you are coming off a morning dive, tell us, and we allow time for rinsing gear and packing. The chauffeur loads dive bags and fishing gear, and the fare stays the same if the road is slow.
Driving conditions
Traffic drives on the right. The main road is paved but narrow and hilly, with speed bumps through villages and occasional potholes after heavy rain. Scooters, tuk-tuks and pedestrians share the shoulder. Rain is heaviest roughly October to January, and passing northers can make ferry crossings rough.
When to plan ahead
- October to April: the main cruise season, with the busiest ship days.
- March or April: Semana Santa, when mainland Hondurans visit the islands and ferries fill.
- Summer: diving season with calm seas and whale shark sightings off Utila.
Hurricane season runs June to November; if a storm changes flights or sailings, your booking moves with it.
