Faa'a International Airport (PPT), on Tahiti, is the only international gateway to French Polynesia's 118 islands. Bora Bora's airport is on Motu Mute, a small islet in the lagoon, so guests reach the main island or their resort by boat, and the road journey starts only after that crossing. Road distances on Tahiti and Bora Bora

The coastal road around Tahiti Nui, the larger part of the island, is about 115 km and takes 3 to 4 hours with stops at the waterfalls and lookouts. Moorea is 30 to 45 minutes from Papeete by ferry. You can book the Tahiti circuit as a city tour or day trip.

Driving conditions, seasons and island events

French Polynesia drives on the right. On Tahiti, most traffic uses the coastal ring road, and Papeete's approaches get congested on weekday mornings and afternoons. On the smaller islands, the roads are simple ring roads with low speed limits, and the choice of vehicles is narrower than on Tahiti. The dry season runs from about May to October, and the warmer, wetter season from about November to April.

Heiva i Tahiti, the major festival of Polynesian dance, song and traditional sports, takes over Papeete in July. The Tahiti Pearl Regatta sails between the Leeward Islands, usually in May. The Hawaiki Nui Va'a outrigger canoe race links Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a and Bora Bora, usually in November. In Papeete, trips centre on the waterfront, the municipal market, the government offices and the cruise berths. Faa'a airport is the starting point for every island itinerary. In Bora Bora, most driving is from Vaitape to Matira Point, while the resorts on the outer islets are reached by boat. Moorea's coast road is about 60 km around and passes Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, and a half-day loop that includes the Belvedere lookout is a common excursion for hotel guests and cruise passengers.
