Driving realities: left-hand traffic, odd-even rules and Nyepi

Indonesia drives on the left. Jakarta applies an odd-even number plate rule (ganjil-genap) on many main roads during morning and evening peaks, so an affiliate may route around restricted corridors or assign a car whose plate matches the day. Toll roads (jalan tol) connect CGK to the city and run to Bandung and along Java. Motorbikes dominate city traffic in Jakarta, Surabaya and south Bali, which keeps average speeds low even outside rush hour.

The wet season runs roughly November to March, when afternoon downpours flood low-lying Jakarta streets. In Bali, Nyepi, the Day of Silence, usually falls in March: the whole island shuts down for 24 hours, the airport closes and no vehicles move, so plan arrivals around it. Bali villa arrivals deserve a note. Many private villas in Canggu, Uluwatu and the Ubud hills sit on narrow lanes (gang) where larger vehicles cannot turn, so the chauffeur may stop at the nearest road wide enough and a villa attendant walks guests in. Give the villa name and a map pin when you book, and mention surfboards or golf bags so the right class is assigned. Domestic connections at CGK and DPS include 30 minutes of waiting from landing, with 15-minute blocks after that.
