Chauffeur service in Rwanda: arriving in Kigali

Kigali International Airport at Kanombe, about 10 km east of the city centre, is Rwanda's international gateway. A much larger airport is under construction in the Bugesera district south of the capital, but until it opens, all international flights use Kanombe. Rwanda issues visas on arrival to all nationalities, and citizens of many African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie countries receive them free of charge. Rules change, so check the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration before you travel. Rwanda also bans single-use plastic bags, and they can be confiscated at the airport.

Intercity routes and realistic times

Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills for good reason: roads are well paved but climb and wind constantly, so average speeds are modest.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park starts early from the park headquarters at Kinigi, so most visitors either stay near Musanze the night before or leave Kigali well before dawn. Permits are issued through the Rwanda Development Board, not by us.

Border crossings into Uganda at Gatuna or into Tanzania at Rusumo involve full immigration formalities on both sides, and vehicles need the right cross-border paperwork, so these trips are arranged by a coordinator and confirmed in writing. Inside Rwanda, cars are driven by vetted local affiliate operators, and the confirmation names the operator and chauffeur. For a long day in the national parks, an hourly booking with a minimum of three hours keeps the vehicle with you throughout.

Driving realities, Umuganda and the Rwandan calendar

Rwanda drives on the right. Kigali is known for clean, orderly streets, strict speed enforcement by cameras and heavy fines. On the last Saturday of each month, Umuganda, a national community-work morning, restricts most traffic from about 8 am to 11 am. Plan airport runs around it, or allow time for checks.

The climate is mild because of altitude. The long rains run from about March to May and the short rains from about September to December. The long dry season from June to August is the peak time for gorilla trekking and safaris.

• June to August: the main safari and trekking season.
• Second half of the year: Kwita Izina, the gorilla naming ceremony near Kinigi, usually.

Choosing a vehicle class for Rwanda

Kigali has positioned itself as a conference city, with the Kigali Convention Centre, BK Arena and the ministries in Kacyiru. Development agencies, embassies and investors make government and diplomatic and event transportation the core of the business.
