Cancun International Airport: terminals and pickup
Cancun International Airport (CUN) is operated by ASUR and sits on the mainland south of the city, about 20 km from the middle of the Hotel Zone. It is Mexico's second-busiest airport and handles most of the country's international leisure traffic. Terminals 2, 3 and 4 carry the scheduled flights: Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 handle most flights from the US, Canada and Europe, while Terminal 2 has domestic and some international traffic. Terminal 1 has been brought back into service in 2026 after years of closure, so check the terminal on your confirmation. Terminal information is published by ASUR.
After immigration and customs, passengers walk through an exit corridor lined with desks offering tours, timeshares and taxis. You do not need to stop: your transfer is already paid for at a fixed fare. Once outside, the chauffeur meets you at the airport's designated area for pre-arranged transport, which is the standard pickup. A name-board meet and greet is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations, and the engine shows whether it is offered at your terminal. Transport pickups in the airport zone are limited to operators holding the required federal permit, which is one more reason to arrange your car in advance.

All affiliate vehicles are four model years old or younger, with Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley accepted up to seven. Partner classes such as stretch limousines are limited in Quintana Roo, so book them early. For return trips, set the hotel pickup about three hours before an international departure: allow for the drive, check-in queues that build on Saturday and Sunday changeover days, and security screening. On those peak days the airport approach road and the terminal curbs are at their busiest, and chauffeurs stage outside the drop-off lanes until your time.
The Hotel Zone, downtown and the resort coast
The Zona Hotelera is a 7-shaped strip of sand between the Caribbean and the Nichupté Lagoon, running along Boulevard Kukulcán. Addresses are given by kilometre marker, from about km 3 near downtown to km 24 at Punta Nizuc, and the chauffeur will ask for yours. The north arm faces calm water towards Isla Mujeres; from km 9 south the beaches face the open sea. Punta Cancún around km 9 has the nightclubs, the Cancún Center convention centre and the main shopping malls. Frequent pickup points include Nizuc Resort at the southern tip, Kempinski Hotel Cancun, the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach and the resorts of the south Hotel Zone.
Beyond the strip, downtown Cancun around Avenida Tulum and Avenida Nader is where residents live and work. Puerto Cancún has the marina, a golf course and newer towers. North of the city, Costa Mujeres and Playa Mujeres are a newer resort area with large all-inclusive properties and the Moon Palace Arena lies south near the airport road. South along the coast, the Riviera Maya begins at Puerto Morelos and runs through Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal to Tulum.
Tulum and the Riviera Maya runs
The run down Highway 307 is the longest regular transfer from CUN. The highway is a free federal road, divided most of the way, with reduced speed zones and speed bumps (topes) through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras. Tulum's hotel zone lies along a narrow beach road where traffic moves slowly in the evening and some properties restrict vehicle access; the chauffeur follows your hotel's instructions at the gate.
Tulum now has its own airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto International (TQO), opened in December 2023 south of the town, which can shorten the trip for some itineraries; many international flights still arrive at CUN. What is the best time to travel, and what should you plan around?
- December to April: the dry high season, with Christmas, New Year and Easter the most booked weeks for transfers.
- March: spring break brings student crowds to the Hotel Zone, especially around Punta Cancún.
- June to November: the Atlantic hurricane season. Most weeks pass normally, but when a storm threatens, airports and roads can close; our desk contacts travellers with affected bookings.
- Spring and summer: sargassum seaweed arrives on some beaches in varying amounts, which some visitors plan around.
- October to November: the Day of the Dead period and the start of the new high season.
Driving realities in Quintana Roo
Mexico drives on the right. Within the Hotel Zone the speed limit is low and pedestrian crossings are frequent; outside the city, Highway 307 has long straight sections broken by town speed zones and topes. Night driving on rural roads to the ruins is avoided where possible because of livestock, cyclists and unlit sections, and chauffeurs plan returns accordingly. Police and military checkpoints are a normal feature of Mexican highways; the chauffeur handles them.
Arriving in Cancun: immigration, Visitax and money
Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and EU countries do not need a visa for tourism; immigration at CUN records the permitted stay digitally, and biometric e-gates are in use in several terminals. Customs then uses a random-selection light for bag checks. Quintana Roo charges foreign visitors a state tourism fee, Visitax, paid online before leaving the state; details are on the official Visitax portal. The tourism board, Caribe Mexicano, publishes destination information. Your transfer fare is fixed at booking, so no pesos or dollars are needed for the chauffeur.
Travelling with confidence
Cancun's resort areas receive millions of visitors a year, and ordinary precautions go a long way. Arrange airport transport in advance rather than accepting offers in the terminal, check the chauffeur's name and the vehicle against your confirmation, keep valuables out of view and ask your hotel before walking far at night outside the Hotel Zone. Read your government's travel advisory for Quintana Roo before you go. Families travelling with a higher profile can request an armoured SUV through a partner, after a risk assessment.
Weddings, groups, villas and hotel concierges
Destination weddings, incentive trips and golf groups bring guests from dozens of flights, often over two or three days. A coordinator plans group transportation around the arrivals list, sends each guest a confirmation and adds shuttles between resort and venue. Resorts and villa managers can arrange guest transfers through hotels and concierge accounts. Local operators with permitted vehicles can register as an affiliate for $30 a month as an owner-operator or $50 as a limousine company or fleet owner.
