Two airports, one fixed fare: CUN versus TQO
Tulum travellers can land at either airport. TQO, opened in December 2023, is much closer but has fewer routes. CUN has the widest choice of flights from North America and Europe but means a long drive down the coast. Compare them before you buy tickets:

How the pickup works at TQO
Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport lies south of Tulum, off Highway 307, and is run by a state-owned group linked to the Tren Maya project; general information is on Wikipedia. The terminal is small, so the walk from baggage claim to the kerb is short. Like every Mexican airport, it is federal ground, and only transport with the federal permit may pick passengers up at the building. Pre-booked vehicles wait in the area designated for pre-arranged transport, where your chauffeur meets you; that curbside pickup is standard. A meet and greet inside arrivals with a name board is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. The Tren Maya has a station at the airport, useful if you travel light and are heading to a station stop.
How the pickup works at Cancun
At Cancun International, run by ASUR, follow the exit after customs and ignore the desks selling rides and timeshares; the transfer is already paid. The chauffeur waits at the pre-arranged transport area outside your terminal. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked: after an international landing you have 60 minutes of included waiting, 30 minutes after a domestic flight and 15 minutes at other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. For the long run south, the car stops if anyone needs a break.

Highway 307 has topes and lower limits through every town, and roadworks linked to the railway have slowed some stretches. Night drives on the Cobá road are avoided where possible because it is narrow and unlit.
Tulum's zones: where exactly are you staying?
Tulum is spread out, and the address changes the pickup:
- The hotel zone (Zona Hotelera) is the beach road running south from the ruins towards the Sian Ka'an reserve. It is narrow, slow in the evening, and many boutique hotels have no parking; the chauffeur stops at the gate and staff collect bags.
- Tulum Pueblo is the town along the highway, with restaurants, shops and the ADO bus station.
- Aldea Zamá sits between town and beach, with condos, villas and restaurants.
- La Veleta and Región 15 are newer residential areas south-west of town, where streets can be unpaved; give a map pin.
- Tankah Bay and Soliman Bay lie a few minutes north, with private villas behind gates.
- Akumal, 25 minutes north, is known for its turtle bay and rentals.

Day trips by chauffeur
Book the hourly chauffeur service or a round trip for:
- Cobá, with its tall pyramid and cycle paths through the forest, about 45 minutes inland.
- The cenote circuit on the Cobá road, including Gran Cenote and Dos Ojos, most of them 10 to 25 minutes away.
- Sian Ka'an, the UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve south of the hotel zone, where boat tours start from Muyil or Punta Allen.
- Bacalar, the lagoon of seven colours, a full-day trip of about 2 h 15 to 2 h 45 each way.
- Chichén Itzá and Valladolid, around 2 h to 2 h 30 inland, best started early.

Vehicles for the jungle and the beach road
Sedans handle the highway, but many Tulum guests pick an executive SUV for the higher ride on sandy and unpaved streets in La Veleta. Standard Black SUVs take families and surf or dive gear, and Sprinter Vans carry wedding parties and retreat groups. Seasons, festivals and weather
High season runs from December to April, with Christmas, New Year and March spring break the busiest weeks. Tulum hosts electronic music events and art weeks in January and during the winter season, when villas and beach clubs fill. Sargassum can reach the beaches roughly from May to October. Hurricane season is June to November.
Entry paperwork: FMM and the state tourism fee
If you fly in, immigration records your permitted stay electronically when your passport is scanned, which produces a digital FMM; the fee is normally already in your ticket. Travellers crossing from Belize by land still complete an FMM, available online from INM. Quintana Roo's Visitax is a separate state fee for foreign visitors, paid online before departure. Safety, cash and practical notes
Arrange transport before you land rather than taking offers inside the terminal, and check the name and plate against the confirmation. The fare is prepaid, so you do not need pesos for the ride. Mexico drives on the right, and federal and military checkpoints on Highway 307 are routine; the chauffeur handles them. Child seats are free on request.

Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup and nothing is charged. Inside 72 hours the fee is 10 %, inside 48 hours it rises to 50 %, and at 24 hours or less, or for a no-show, the full fare applies.
