Chauffeur service across Oman: what to know

Muscat International Airport (MCT) opened its current passenger terminal in 2018 at Seeb, on the capital's western side. The capital area stretches for around 50 km along the coast, so drive times vary: about 15-25 minutes to Al Khuwair and Qurum, 30-40 minutes to Muttrah and Old Muscat, and 40-50 minutes to the resorts around Al Bustan and Bandar Jissah. Salalah International (SLL) in Dhofar is the second gateway, only about 10 minutes from Salalah's hotels.

The chauffeur tracks your flight and waits at the designated pickup area, with 60 minutes included on international arrivals and 30 minutes on the domestic Muscat-Salalah route. A name-board meet and greet in the Muscat or Salalah arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Road routes from Muscat and Salalah

A popular two-day circuit from Muscat runs inland to Nizwa's fort and Friday livestock market, climbs to Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams, then crosses to the Wahiba Sands before returning along the coast via Wadi Bani Khalid and Sur. Salalah is a separate trip reached by a flight of about 90 minutes, and khareef-season visitors usually book cars there for Mughsail beach, Wadi Darbat and the frankincense site of Al Baleed.

The final climb to Jebel Akhdar passes a police checkpoint that admits only four-wheel-drive vehicles, so book an SUV class for that route. Cross-border trips to the UAE involve insurance and border formalities and are planned by a coordinator, confirmed in writing.

Driving realities and the Omani year

Oman drives on the right. Highways such as Sultan Qaboos Street and the Muscat Expressway are well built, and speed cameras are widespread and strictly enforced. Roads through the Hajar Mountains and the wadis can flood quickly after rain, and camels may cross rural roads, especially at night. Parking charges at the airport and the chauffeur's gratuity are added at the amount actually incurred.

The cooler season from October to April is the main travel window for Muscat and the desert. Salalah is different: the khareef monsoon, roughly late June to September, turns Dhofar green and draws large numbers of Gulf visitors, with the Salalah Tourism Festival held in the same months. Muscat Nights, a winter festival, usually runs in January and February, and the Tour of Oman cycling race is usually held in February. Ramadan and the two Eid holidays shift business hours and traffic patterns.
