Lithuanian distances look modest on a map, but the A1 is the only motorway, and much of the rest of the network is two-lane road with farm traffic and speed cameras. A day that pairs Kaunas meetings with a Trakai dinner is comfortable by car; adding Klaipėda to the same day is not. For longer programmes, an intercity transfer one way and a flight or train back is often the cleaner plan.

Driving rules, winters and the Lithuanian calendar

Traffic drives on the right, and dipped headlights must be on at all times, day or night. Winter tyres are compulsory from mid-November to the end of March, and snow and early darkness in December and January lengthen journey times on rural roads.

Vilnius's Old Town has cobbled lanes, pedestrian zones and paid parking areas, so drop-offs are usually made at the edge of the zone near Cathedral Square or the Town Hall. Business travellers heading to the newer towers across the Neris river, around Konstitucijos Avenue, have a quicker ride.
