Chauffeur service across Sri Lanka: what to know

Almost every international visitor arrives at Bandaranaike International (CMB) in Katunayake, about 32 km north of Colombo Fort. The Colombo-Katunayake Expressway usually gets you into the city in 30 to 45 minutes, and the Outer Circular Expressway gives a direct route south towards Galle without going through the centre. Mattala Rajapaksa International, in the far south, has very few scheduled flights. When you book, you see a fixed fare for the address, date, time and vehicle. There is no meter running while the car waits in traffic.

The chauffeur meets you at the airport's pickup area for pre-booked cars, after immigration and customs. The trip is driven by a vetted local affiliate, and the confirmation names the operator and the chauffeur. Flights are tracked and you have 60 minutes of included waiting after the actual landing. A greeter with a name board is an add-on, available only in selected locations. Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly; apply through the official Sri Lanka ETA portal. Typical journey times on the island

Distances in Sri Lanka look short on a map, but average speeds on the A-roads through towns and hill country are often 30 to 40 km/h. Plan by hours, not kilometres.

Multi-day circuits through the Cultural Triangle, the tea country and the south coast work best booked as consecutive city tours and day trips, or as hourly blocks of at least 3 hours.

Driving conditions, monsoons and festivals

Sri Lanka drives on the left. The Southern, Katunayake and Outer Circular expressways are tolled, fast and much quieter than the A-roads, where buses, three-wheelers and cyclists share narrow lanes. In the hill country, the roads above Kandy climb through hairpins with long drops, and chauffeurs working near national parks slow down after dark because elephants cross.

There are two monsoons. The southwest monsoon, from about May to September, brings rain to Colombo, Galle and the west coast, while the east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay has its dry season. The northeast monsoon, from about December to February, reverses the pattern. Sinhala and Tamil New Year falls on 13 and 14 April, Vesak on the full moon in May, and the Esala Perahera procession fills Kandy in July or August. Choosing a vehicle for island travel

In Colombo, a Luxury Executive Sedan (S-Class class, 2 passengers, 2 bags) suits meetings between Colombo 3 and the port. For the hill country, a Standard Black SUV (6 passengers, 6 bags) has room for a family's luggage and a higher ride for broken road edges. An Executive Black SUV adds more comfort on long days. Business and leisure centres

Most business travel in Colombo happens around Colombo Fort, Galle Face and Kollupitiya, and at the land reclaimed for Port City Colombo. The port also handles cruise calls and seafarer movements, which shipping crew change trips are set up for; crew changes are planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing. Leisure trips go to Galle Fort, Sigiriya, the temple city of Kandy and the tea estates around Nuwara Eliya. On the south coast, the boutique villas between Tangalle and Mirissa are usually reached on the Southern Expressway, then by slower coastal roads for the last stretch.
