The term started in New York, where "black car" came to mean a pre-arranged, chauffeur-driven car sent by a base rather than hailed on the street, typically a black Lincoln Town Car billed to a corporate account. How to book a black car near you

You receive a written confirmation straight away. The chauffeur's name, mobile number and vehicle details arrive before pickup. For same-day requests, the engine shows what can be confirmed at that notice; for anything it cannot place, the 24/7 desk will look for an alternative.
What does a black car cost, and what is included?
There is no single price for a black car service, because cities, routes and vehicle classes differ. What does not change is how the fare is built. The figure the engine shows includes:
- The vehicle and chauffeur for the route, door to door.
- Included waiting: 15 minutes at a normal pickup, 30 minutes after a domestic flight lands and 60 minutes after an international one, all counted from the actual landing time for airports.
- Flight tracking on every airport pickup, so a delay does not cost you anything within the included time.
- Airport access charges.
- Child seats in most cities, free on request.
Waiting beyond the included time is charged in 15-minute blocks. Extra stops and route changes made on the day are added at the booked rate. Gratuity, airport parking and congestion or low-emission-zone charges on a black car trip are billed at actual cost and added to the booking. Exact models differ by city, and the engine lists the class, not a guaranteed make. Every vehicle is four model years old or newer. How is a black car service different from rideshare?
Both are booked from a screen, which is where the similarity ends.
- Price. A rideshare fare is calculated at the moment you request it and can rise sharply when demand peaks. A black car fare is fixed when you book, often days ahead.
- Timing. A rideshare driver is found when you press the button. A black car is assigned in advance, and the chauffeur is scheduled to be there before the pickup time.

Booking changes and cancellation
You can change the pickup time, the address or the vehicle class from your confirmation, or ask the 24/7 desk, which answers every hour of the year. If the change affects the fare, you see the new figure before you accept it.
Cancellation charges are counted back from the pickup time:
- Cancel with more than 72 hours to go and nothing is charged.
- With 72 hours or fewer left, the charge is 10 %.
- With 48 hours or fewer, it is 50 %.
- With 24 hours or fewer, or on a no-show, the whole fare is charged.
What happens on the day of a black car pickup?
The day before, you receive the chauffeur's name, mobile number and the vehicle's make, colour and plate where the operator has assigned them. On the day, the chauffeur arrives ahead of the booked time, parks as close to the door as local rules allow and sends a text on arrival. At a hotel, the car usually waits at the front entrance or the taxi bay; at an office tower, at the lobby drop-off or a loading bay the building nominates.
Inside the car you will find a clean cabin, bottled water and a chauffeur who asks about temperature and route preferences, then leaves you to your calls. If the plan changes on the way, for example a colleague to collect from a second address or a detour to a pharmacy, tell the chauffeur: the stop is logged with dispatch and added at the booked rate. At the destination the chauffeur handles the bags, and the receipt arrives by email once the trip closes. For airport pickups, the chauffeur follows your flight and messages you after landing with the exact spot in the pickup area, since standard pickups are curbside and arrivals-hall meet and greet is an add-on offered only in selected locations.
Where a city has specific rules for pre-booked cars, such as the licensing set by Singapore's Land Transport Authority, the operator works within them, and the pickup instructions in your confirmation already reflect them.
Staying safe with any car service
Whoever you book with, a few checks are worth making. Confirm that the driver and vehicle match the details you were sent before getting in. Do not accept rides from people soliciting in arrivals halls; licensed pre-booked cars wait in designated areas or by prior arrangement. Where a city publishes its licensing rules, such as the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, you can check that the operator is licensed.
