How to book a Port Canaveral transfer

The cruise terminals at Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral sits at the mouth of the Banana River on Florida's Atlantic coast, between the city of Cape Canaveral and the Space Force station, and is one of the busiest multi-day cruise ports in the world. It is not a city of its own: the terminals and the restaurants of The Cove are reached from the Beachline and State Road 401. The terminals are split across two sides of the harbour:
- North side: Cruise Terminals 5, 6, 8 and 10, strung along Charles M. Rowland Drive.
- South side: Cruise Terminals 1, 2 and 3, reached by a separate approach road, with Terminal 3 the largest single terminal in the port.
Getting the terminal number right matters because the north and south sides are several minutes apart by road, and security gates control each. Embarkation day
Drop-off lanes at each terminal are reserved for passenger vehicles and ground transportation, and porters take checked bags at the curb before you go through security. Arriving within your cruise line's check-in window avoids queuing outside. From an Orlando hotel, plan to leave about 1.5 to 2 hours before your window opens.
Disembarkation morning
Ships usually arrive early in the morning and passengers leave the ship over a few hours after customs clearance. Pre-arranged transportation collects from the designated ground transportation area at each terminal, and the chauffeur contacts you when you have your bags. Because disembarkation times vary, we suggest booking a pickup for your assigned walk-off time and listing a mobile number that works in the US.
Orlando International (MCO) to Port Canaveral
Most cruise passengers fly into Orlando International Airport. It has Terminals A and B in the main building and Terminal C, opened in 2022, on the south side of the airport, each with its own ground transportation area. Curbside pickup at the designated commercial or pre-arranged pickup area for your terminal is standard; meet and greet in arrivals with a name board is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.
The drive is about 45 miles, almost all of it on the Beachline (SR 528), and usually takes 45 to 60 minutes. For airport guidance, see the Orlando Airports site. Many cruisers combine the port with a stay in Orlando; the resort areas near International Drive and Lake Buena Vista are about 55 to 65 miles from the terminals, roughly 1 to 1.25 hours.
Melbourne and Sanford: the other gateway airports
Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) is about 25 miles south of the port, typically 30 to 45 minutes via US 1 or State Road A1A and the Pineda Causeway. It is a smaller terminal with shorter walks, and its schedule includes flights from several US cities. Details are on the Melbourne airport site.
Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), north of Orlando, is about 55 to 60 miles from the port, typically 60 to 80 minutes via State Road 417 and the Beachline. It is used mainly by leisure carriers and seasonal charters. Curbside pickup at each airport's designated area is standard.

Customs for returning cruise passengers and international flyers
Cruise passengers returning to Port Canaveral clear US Customs and Border Protection in the terminal before leaving the building. US citizens on closed-loop cruises may travel with other accepted proof of citizenship, but a passport makes re-entry and any unplanned flight home simpler; the rules are on CBP. Non-US travellers flying into Orlando clear customs at MCO, and Visa Waiver visitors need an approved ESTA. For international arrivals at MCO, the 60-minute waiting allowance starts at actual landing.
Staying in Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island
Many passengers arrive a night early to take the stress out of flight delays. The nearest options are hotels in the city of Cape Canaveral and along A1A in Cocoa Beach, a few minutes from the terminals: the Radisson Resort at the Port, the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront and the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier among them. Cocoa Beach has the pier, the surf shops and a long public beach. Merritt Island, across the Banana River, and the historic Cocoa Village on the Indian River Lagoon offer quieter stays. Melbourne and Viera, further south, suit travellers flying into MLB.
Kennedy Space Center and launch viewing
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on Merritt Island is 20 to 30 minutes from the port and is the most popular pre- or post-cruise day out, with the Space Shuttle Atlantis exhibit and bus tours to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. Rocket launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center are frequent, and on launch days traffic around State Road 528, State Road 401 and the causeways in Titusville and Cocoa Beach can build for hours before and after. Space Coast events and seasons
Cruise traffic runs year-round, with the heaviest weeks during school holidays, spring break in March, and the December holidays. Other things to plan around:
- Launch days: throughout the year, often announced only days or weeks ahead.
- Spring: air shows and surf events have been held at Cocoa Beach and nearby Patrick Space Force Base in some years.
- June to November: Atlantic hurricane season. Port closures and ship schedule changes are announced by the port and cruise lines, and we rebook transfers when a sailing moves.
Intercity links from the Space Coast
- Orlando: 55 to 65 miles, 1 to 1.25 hours to the resort areas.
- Tampa: about 130 miles via the Beachline and Interstate 4, 2 to 2.5 hours, useful for back-to-back cruises from Port Tampa Bay.
- Jacksonville: about 150 miles on Interstate 95, 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Miami: about 200 miles, 3 to 3.5 hours via Interstate 95 or Florida's Turnpike, for passengers connecting to PortMiami.

Florida drives on the right. The Beachline is a toll road with cashless tolling. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms that slow traffic for an hour at a time, and A1A through Cocoa Beach is congested on weekend afternoons. Port security gates check vehicles entering terminal areas, so drop-offs happen in the marked lanes only.
