Chauffeur service across Saint-Barthélemy: what to know

Gustaf III Airport (SBH) at St-Jean has one of the Caribbean's shortest commercial runways, so it takes only small aircraft on short hops. Most visitors therefore fly into Princess Juliana International (SXM) on Sint Maarten and connect by a 10-15 minute regional flight or by ferry from Philipsburg or Marigot to Gustavia, a crossing of roughly 45-75 minutes depending on the sea. Private jet travellers land at SXM and transfer by small aircraft or yacht tender.

On arrival at SBH the chauffeur tracks your flight and waits at the designated pickup area; a short regional hop counts as international, so 60 minutes from landing are included. Other pickups, such as the Gustavia ferry dock, include 15 minutes of waiting. Meet and greet with a name board can be added to the booking, although add-ons are only available in selected locations. Trips are driven by a vetted island affiliate, and the confirmation names the operator and chauffeur.

Short island transfers

An hourly booking of three hours or more suits an evening with several stops, since parking near the Gustavia restaurants is limited in high season. Travellers connecting through SXM can book the Sint Maarten leg separately so that a car is waiting at the ferry terminal or at Princess Juliana on the return.

Driving realities and the season

The island drives on the right, as in France. It covers only about 25 square kilometres, but its roads are narrow, winding and steep, with hairpins above Colombier, Lurin and Vitet, and parking in Gustavia is tight in peak weeks. Compact vehicles are the norm here, which is why a chauffeur is often more practical than a self-drive rental for evenings out. Any parking at the airport or harbour and gratuity are added at the actual amount.

High season runs from mid-December to April, peaking over Christmas and New Year, when superyachts fill Gustavia harbour and New Year's Eve fireworks draw crowds to the quay. The St Barths Bucket superyacht regatta is usually held in March, and Les Voiles de Saint-Barth usually takes place in April. Hurricane season runs June to November, and many hotels and restaurants close for part of September and October.
