Chauffeur service across Tunisia: what to know

Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN) is about 8 km north-east of the capital's centre, 15 to 30 minutes by car. Most package holidays fly into Enfidha-Hammamet (NBE), between Hammamet and Sousse, or into Monastir (MIR). Djerba-Zarzis (DJE) serves the southern island. Many nationalities can visit Tunisia without a visa for a limited stay, but the list and the permitted length of stay vary. Check with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest consulate before you travel. Cruise ships dock at La Goulette, about 12 km from central Tunis and close to the ruins of Carthage.

At TUN, your driver waits in the area set aside for pre-booked cars outside arrivals. A name board inside the arrivals hall is an add-on, available only in selected locations. The booker shows the fixed fare for your address, date, time and vehicle, and your confirmation names the vetted local affiliate and the chauffeur. Because the flight is tracked, the 60 minutes of included waiting on international arrivals starts from the actual landing.

Classic routes from the capital

The A1 motorway runs south from Tunis towards Hammamet, Sousse and Sfax and is the quickest route down the coast. Two of the most popular heritage days, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd, and Dougga, can be booked as city tours and day trips.

Driving realities and the Tunisian year

Tunisia drives on the right. Tunisie Autoroutes operates the A1 and the other motorways, which charge tolls at plazas. Police checkpoints are common on main roads and at the edges of towns. Traffic in Tunis is heaviest around Bab Saadoun, Avenue Mohamed V and the coastal road to La Marsa, especially on summer weekends. During Ramadan, the streets fill in the hour before the evening meal and then empty.

July and August are hot, with inland temperatures often above 35°C, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for touring. The International Festival of Carthage fills the Roman theatre on summer evenings in July and August, and Hammamet holds its own summer festival at the same time. Choosing the vehicle

A Luxury Executive Sedan (2 passengers, 2 bags) suits business travel between TUN and Les Berges du Lac. A family with suitcases going to a Hammamet hotel will be more comfortable in a Standard Black SUV (6 passengers, 6 bags). Cruise passengers from La Goulette on a Carthage tour can share a Sprinter Van for up to 12. For a long intercity transfer to Sousse or Kairouan, the Executive Black SUV gives more room.
