Costa Rica has two main international airports. Juan Santamaria International, in Alajuela about 20 km north-west of central San Jose, serves the capital, the Central Valley and the Pacific coast around Manuel Antonio. Many nationalities can visit without a visa for a limited stay, but immigration officers may ask for proof of onward travel, and passports should be valid for the whole trip. The rules are published by the Direccion General de Migracion y Extranjeria.

Road times between the valley, volcanoes and beaches

Costa Rica's distances are short but its roads climb, curve and cross rivers, so averages of 40 to 50 km an hour are normal outside the motorways.

These are booked as intercity transfers, and a combined volcano and hot-spring day works well as an hourly chauffeur booking with the three-hour minimum.

Driving realities, seasons and national dates

Costa Rica drives on the right. Route 27 between San Jose and the Pacific port of Caldera is a toll road, and it is the fast link toward Jaco and Manuel Antonio. Greater San Jose applies a weekday vehicle restriction, the restriccion vehicular, based on the last digit of the licence plate, and afternoon traffic on the General Canas highway toward the airport can double a transfer time. Some roads to Monteverde and the Nicoya coast still include gravel stretches, and river levels can rise quickly in heavy rain.

The dry season runs roughly from December to April, and the green season from May to November brings afternoon downpours, especially in September and October on the Pacific side. Dates to plan around:

• Late December to early January: Christmas and New Year, the busiest beach weeks of the year.
• January: the Palmares fiestas, which draw large crowds west of the capital.
• March or April: Semana Santa, when many residents head to the coast.
• July 25: Guanacaste Day, marked with parades and rodeo events in Liberia.
• September 15: Independence Day, with lantern parades the night before.

Choosing a vehicle class in Costa Rica
