LIR airport transfers: the short version
- Book with your flight number and resort or villa address.

- After immigration and customs, walk out to the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside the terminal, where the chauffeur meets you curbside.

LIR sits about 12 km west of the town of Liberia, on the road towards the coast. Most traffic is international, from the US and Canada, and Saturdays in the dry season see several wide-bodies land within a couple of hours, which is when immigration queues run longest. The included waiting absorbs most of that.

Times are dry-season ranges. In the green season, roughly May to November, rain slows the unpaved final stretches to Nosara and some villa roads, and river levels matter on back routes. We quote the same fixed fare either way.
Peninsula Papagayo and the Gold Coast
The Papagayo Peninsula, reached through a gated entry off the coast road, is home to the Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica and the Andaz Costa Rica Resort, with marina berths at Marina Papagayo. South along the coast sit Playas del Coco, Ocotal, Playa Hermosa and Playa Panama with their villas and smaller hotels. Around Flamingo and Conchal, the Westin and W at Reserva Conchal share one resort estate, and Las Catalinas is a car-free town where the chauffeur drops at the edge and a buggy takes over. Tell us the gate or security name at booking; gated communities want the guest's name in advance.
Tamarindo, Nosara and the Nicoya coast
Tamarindo is Guanacaste's liveliest beach town, about an hour from LIR, and the base for surf schools and restaurants. Further south, Nosara and Playa Guiones are reached on a road that is paved only in part; allow 2 to 2.5 hours and a higher-clearance vehicle. Santa Teresa and Mal Pais sit at the far end of the Nicoya Peninsula and are usually closer from San Jose by the Puntarenas ferry, or by a short domestic flight to Tambor.
Which vehicle suits Guanacaste?
An executive SUV is the default for Guanacaste: dry-season dust, occasional rough driveways and surfboard or golf-bag luggage all favour it. A Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van carries a family or a wedding group; minicoaches and motorcoaches handle resort groups and destination weddings, planned by a coordinator. A Standard Sedan works for LIR to Papagayo or Coco on paved roads. The fleet page lists all nine classes, and rates sets out what each fare covers. Child seats are free on request.
Departing from LIR
For the return, allow about two and a half to three hours at the airport before an international flight: the terminal handles large waves of departures around midday on Saturdays and Sundays, and exit immigration follows check-in. From Papagayo that means leaving the resort about three to three and a half hours before departure; from Tamarindo allow closer to four, and from Nosara five or more. Give us the flight number and the desk sets the pickup time. Late checkout plans, a lunch stop in Liberia town or a detour to buy coffee are easy to add, and the chauffeur loads surfboards or golf bags if you told us about them at booking.
Private jets at LIR
LIR takes a steady flow of private jets in high season, parked on the general aviation ramp. Our private aviation desk arranges the car to meet the passengers where the handler allows, with bags loaded while the paperwork clears. Charter passengers still go through Costa Rican immigration and customs on arrival.
Entry requirements
Costa Rica is visa-free for US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens, with tourist stays of up to 180 days at the officer's discretion. Carry proof of onward travel; airlines check it at check-in. Roads and driving in Guanacaste
Traffic drives on the right. Route 21 links LIR with Liberia town, Carrillo and Santa Cruz, and the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) runs north to the Nicaraguan border at Penas Blancas, about 75 km away. Cattle on the road, cyclists at dusk and one-lane bridges are normal. There is little street lighting outside towns, which is one reason many visitors prefer not to drive themselves after an evening arrival.
Tours and days out with a chauffeur
A chauffeur and car by the hour or the day suits the region well. Common plans:
- Rincon de la Vieja National Park for hot springs, mud baths and waterfalls.
- A day at Llano de Cortes waterfall near Bagaces and lunch in Liberia town.
- Sunset at Playa Conchal, then dinner in Tamarindo.
- A full-day run to Arenal volcano and the La Fortuna hot springs.

Safety notes
Costa Rica is rated Level 2 by the US State Department, and in Guanacaste the main risk to visitors is theft from rental cars at beaches and trailheads. A chauffeur who stays with the vehicle removes that problem. Check travel.state.gov before you travel.
Guanacaste events and seasons
- December to April: the dry high season, with the heaviest resort occupancy around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
- 25 July: Guanacaste Day, marking the annexation to Costa Rica, with parades and rodeos in Liberia and Santa Cruz.
- March or April: Semana Santa, when domestic travellers fill the beaches.
