Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX): terminals and pickup points
Most Scottsdale visitors fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, about 12 miles south-west of Old Town Scottsdale. Commercial flights use Terminal 3 and Terminal 4; Terminal 2 has closed. The PHX Sky Train links the terminals with the economy parking, the 44th Street station and the Valley Metro light rail. International flights arrive at Terminal 4, where U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing takes place.
Sky Harbor sends travellers to signed "Prearranged Vehicle Pickup" areas after baggage claim. The airport's guidance puts them on the outer curb near the north doors at Terminal 3 and on the Level 1 outer curbs at Terminal 4, past the rental car and rideshare areas. Curbside pickup there is the standard service. A name-board meet inside baggage claim is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Scottsdale Airport (SDL) and private jets
Scottsdale Airport, in the Airpark north of Shea Boulevard, is one of the busiest business-aviation airports in the Southwest and has no scheduled airline service. It offers on-site U.S. Customs and Border Protection for approved international private arrivals during published hours, with advance notice required. FBOs on the field include Signature. Scottsdale stretches about 30 miles north to south, so it helps to know which part you are heading for:
- Old Town Scottsdale. Galleries, restaurants, the entertainment district and Hotel Valley Ho, with Scottsdale Fashion Square next door.
- Paradise Valley. A separate town of resorts and estates below Camelback Mountain: JW Marriott Camelback Inn, Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain, Mountain Shadows and Omni Scottsdale Resort at Montelucia.
- Camelback corridor. The Phoenician, with its Canyon Suites, on the Phoenix and Scottsdale border.
- McCormick Ranch and Gainey Ranch. Resort golf and the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale at Gainey Ranch.
- Kierland and Scottsdale Quarter. Shopping and the Westin Kierland near the Airpark.
- North Scottsdale. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and TPC Scottsdale, then DC Ranch, Troon and the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North.
- Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Salt River Fields and Talking Stick Resort, just east of the Loop 101.
Scottsdale's event season, month by month
Winter and spring are peak months. Dates to plan around:
- January: The Barrett-Jackson collector car auction at WestWorld of Scottsdale.
- Early February: The WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, one of the best-attended golf tournaments anywhere, with heavy traffic on Bell Road and Hayden Road.
- February: The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show at WestWorld.
- Late February to March: Cactus League spring training, including games at Scottsdale Stadium and Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.
- November: Canal Convergence, the light and art festival on the Scottsdale Waterfront.
- All year: Concerts and conventions in Phoenix, and NFL games at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, 35 to 50 minutes away.

Heat, monsoon and the clock: local driving facts
The Phoenix area drives on the right and has no toll roads. The main routes are the Loop 101 (Pima Freeway), the Loop 202, SR-51 and Scottsdale Road itself. Summer afternoons regularly pass 110°F from June to September, so cars are cooled before pickup and bottled water on a desert road is sensible. The monsoon, usually July to September, brings dust storms and sudden downpours that can close roads for short periods; road conditions are on AZ511.
One detail catches out visitors: most of Arizona does not observe daylight saving time. In summer, Scottsdale is on the same clock as Los Angeles; in winter it matches Denver. Check the local time on your flight and restaurant bookings.
Rail and transit notes
Amtrak does not run into Phoenix itself. The nearest stations are Maricopa, about 35 miles south of Sky Harbor, on the Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle, and Flagstaff, about 2.5 hours north, on the Southwest Chief. Valley Metro light rail serves Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa but not Scottsdale. A chauffeur fills the gap for travellers arriving by train at either station.

Golf, spa and resort days by car
Scottsdale has more than 200 golf courses across the Valley, and many visitors play two or three in a week. A golf booking is simplest by the hour: the chauffeur collects at the resort, loads the clubs, waits through the round and the lunch afterwards, and drives on to the next stop. Old Town nights and celebrations
Old Town's entertainment district, around Scottsdale Road, Saddlebag Trail and Craftsman Court, is busy on Friday and Saturday nights and throughout spring training. Street parking is hard to find and rideshare queues can be long at closing time. A stretch limousine or a Sprinter Van keeps a birthday, bachelor or bachelorette group together, and the chauffeur waits at an agreed pickup point rather than circling. Share the itinerary when you book, including the last stop, so the chauffeur can plan the staging point with the venues. Private dinners in Paradise Valley and the Camelback corridor are often easier with a Luxury Executive Sedan, which arrives and leaves quietly.
International visitors
International flights land at Sky Harbor's Terminal 4, where passengers clear customs and immigration before reaching the curb. Most visitors need a passport plus a U.S. visa or an approved ESTA. Private flights from Mexico or Canada can clear at Scottsdale Airport by prior arrangement during CBP hours. The 60 minutes of included waiting on international arrivals starts at actual landing.
