Driving realities and the Hungarian calendar

Hungary drives on the right. Budapest's bridges are the main bottlenecks: the Chain Bridge carries restrictions on private traffic, and the Margaret, Elisabeth and Liberty bridges slow sharply at peak hours. The Grand Boulevard and the approaches to the M0 ring road congest on weekday mornings and evenings. In summer the M7 towards Lake Balaton fills on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.

The busiest weeks are easy to predict. The Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring in Mogyorod is usually held in late July or early August, and roads north-east of the city jam for hours before and after the race. Sziget Festival takes over Obuda Island in August. St Stephen's Day on 20 August brings fireworks over the Danube and riverside closures. The Budapest Wine Festival usually runs in September in the Castle District, and the Advent markets at Vorosmarty Square and St Stephen's Basilica open in late November.
