Juan Santamaria International Airport
SJO is in Alajuela, about 17 to 20 km northwest of central San Jose, and is operated by the private concessionaire AERIS. All commercial flights use a single terminal, which has been expanded several times as traffic from North America and Europe has grown. Immigration and customs at SJO
International passengers clear Costa Rican immigration, then collect bags and pass their luggage through customs scanners. Entry requirements, including passport validity and proof of onward travel, are published by the Direccion General de Migracion y Extranjeria. Arrival times vary: an early-afternoon bank of US flights can mean 45 to 75 minutes to the exit, while an evening European arrival may clear in 30 minutes.

Departing SJO
The airport's departure tax is normally included in airline tickets, so there is no separate payment at the counter for most travellers. Allow about three hours before an international flight. The road is the variable: afternoon traffic on the General Canas highway and Route 1 around Alajuela can be heavy, and travellers coming from Arenal or Manuel Antonio face a drive of three hours or more.
