Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Tocumen
Tocumen, about 24 km east of the banking district, is one of the largest connecting hubs in the Americas, with Copa Airlines as its main carrier. It has two passenger terminals:
- Terminal 2, opened in 2019, handles a large share of international flights, including many Copa services.
- Terminal 1 handles other international airlines and flights.
Many passengers at Tocumen are only connecting and never leave the airside area. If Panama City is your destination, check the terminal on your boarding pass; the chauffeur positions according to your flight record.
Where the pre-booked car collects you
Standard service is a pickup at the designated area for pre-arranged transport outside the arrivals level of your terminal. Taxi dispatchers and drivers approach passengers inside and outside the hall; you already have a car. Contact the chauffeur with the number in your confirmation after customs and they guide you to the vehicle. Immigration and customs in Panama
The Servicio Nacional de Migracion checks passports, with e-gates for some travellers, and the Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas handles customs. Many nationalities enter Panama visa-free for tourism, but you may be asked for proof of onward travel and funds. Allow 25 to 50 minutes from gate to curb, more when several connecting banks arrive at once in the afternoon and evening. Drive times from Tocumen
Two routes connect the airport with the city. The Corredor Sur, a toll road that runs along the coast, is fastest to Costa del Este, Punta Pacifica and the banking district. The Corredor Norte and Via Domingo Diaz are alternatives for the north and west.

Afternoon tropical downpours in the wet season, roughly May to November, can slow the city dramatically. Weekday peaks from 6:30 to 9:00 and 16:30 to 19:30 are the slowest times on the Corredor Sur.
Metro from the airport
Panama Metro Line 2 has a branch to Tocumen, with an Aeropuerto station opened in 2023. From there you can connect to Line 1 at San Miguelito for the city centre. It is quick and inexpensive for travellers with light bags, but it involves a change and a walk. For Punta Pacifica, Casco Viejo or late-night arrivals, a pre-booked car is simpler. Child seats are free on request. You can cancel free of charge more than 72 hours before pickup; within 72 hours the fee is 10%, within 48 hours 50%, and within 24 hours or on a no-show 100%.
Stopovers and long connections
With a long layover at Tocumen, a few hours in the city is possible: the Miraflores Locks visitor centre, Casco Viejo or the Amador Causeway are all within about an hour. Allow time to clear immigration in both directions and return at least two hours before an international departure. Book it as hourly chauffeur hire with a 3-hour minimum, so the car waits while you visit.
Busy periods in Panama
Carnival, in the days before Ash Wednesday (usually February or early March), empties the city toward the interior and fills the roads. The dry season from December to April is peak tourism time, and the November national holidays bring parades and closures in the city.

From Punta Pacifica or the banking district, leave about three hours before an international flight during the afternoon peak and two and a half hours at quieter times; from Casco Viejo, add 15 minutes. Afternoon rain in the wet season can double journey times on the Corredor Sur, so give yourself more room between May and November. Enter the terminal your airline uses as the drop-off.
