Vilnius Airport (VNO): close, compact and quick
Vilnius Airport is one of the closest capital-city airports to its centre in Europe, about 6 to 7 km south of the Old Town, and the drive typically takes 15 to 20 minutes. It is Lithuania's main airport, with the smaller Kaunas Airport (KUN) about 100 km west and Palanga (PLQ) on the coast. At VNO the chauffeur collects curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area next to arrivals and messages you the spot and plate. Old Town, Šnipiškės and the neighbourhoods
The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, runs from Cathedral Square and Gediminas Tower south to the Gates of Dawn, with the university, the Presidential Palace and Pilies gatvė in between. When is Vilnius busiest?
- Early March: Kaziuko mugė, the St Casimir's fair, fills the Old Town streets.
- June: Vilnius Festival of classical music and midsummer (Joninės) on 23-24 June.
- July 6: Statehood Day, a public holiday with ceremonies at the Presidential Palace.
- September: the Vilnius Marathon, usually with road closures in the centre.

Rail: Vilnius station and the airport train
Vilnius railway station (Vilniaus geležinkelio stotis) is at the southern edge of the Old Town beside the bus station. Trakai, Kaunas and Druskininkai

The drive to Riga is about 300 km through Panevėžys and across the Latvian border, where there are no border checks inside Schengen. Driving realities in Lithuania
Lithuania drives on the right, headlights are required in daytime, and winter tyres are mandatory through the winter season, roughly from November into April. Vilnius has hills, cobbled Old Town lanes and one-way loops that make the last few hundred metres of a trip slower than the map suggests. Rush hour concentrates on the bridges over the Neris and the approaches to the airport roundabout.
