Salalah International Airport (SLL) and how pickup works
SLL moved into a new passenger terminal in 2015, on the northern edge of the city, so it is one of the closest airports to a city centre anywhere in the Gulf region. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals. Your chauffeur sends the car details and plate by message once your flight is on the ground. Flights are tracked, so the chauffeur works to your real landing time. Included waiting is 60 minutes from landing on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic flights such as the shuttle from Muscat, and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. In July and August the terminal is crowded with Gulf holidaymakers, and immigration can take longer than the rest of the year.

Mountain roads slow down badly in khareef fog, so treat the upper end of every range as normal between July and early September.
What is the khareef, and why does it change Salalah transport?
The khareef is the southwest monsoon that reaches Dhofar each summer, officially from about 21 June to 21 September. Drizzle and low cloud turn the Jebel Qara slopes green while the rest of the Arabian Peninsula is at its hottest, and visitors from Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar come in large numbers. For ground transport, the season means three things. Hotels fill, so book vehicles as early as you book rooms. Traffic on the Taqah road, the Itin plateau road and the routes to Ayn Razat, Ayn Khor and Wadi Darbat builds on weekend afternoons. And visibility in the hills can drop to a few metres, which is why an experienced local chauffeur is worth more here than a rental car. Camels and cattle wander onto roads at any hour.
A khareef day with a chauffeur
The hourly chauffeur service or a day trip fits Dhofar well, because the car waits while you walk. A common eastern loop: Ayn Razat springs, Taqah castle and beach, Wadi Darbat and its seasonal waterfalls, Khor Rori and the ruins of Sumhuram, then Mirbat for the old fort and seafront. A western loop covers the frankincense trees of Wadi Dawkah on the Thumrait road, the switchback coast road to Mughsail, and the blowholes and cliff views beyond. Al Baleed, Sumhuram and Wadi Dawkah together form the UNESCO-listed Land of Frankincense. Outside the monsoon, from October to April, the same trips run under clear skies with beach weather on the coast.
Resorts, hotels and the Port of Salalah
The city splits into clear zones. Central Salalah runs along the corniche and Al Haffa, with its fruit stalls, frankincense souq and the Sultan Qaboos Mosque inland. Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara sits beside the archaeological park just east of the centre. The integrated resort area at Hawana Salalah, on Salalah Beach toward Taqah, groups hotels including the Juweira Boutique Hotel and the Salalah Rotana Resort around a marina. The Crowne Plaza and the Hilton Salalah Resort stand on the beaches nearer town.
The Port of Salalah at Raysut, west of the city, is a major container terminal that also receives cruise calls in the cooler months. Passengers are usually moved from the berth to the port gate by shuttle, and the chauffeur meets you at the agreed point outside. Seafarer sign-on and sign-off transfers between the port and SLL are booked through shipping crew change, and cruise calls through cruise lines and ports.
Driving between Salalah and Muscat
The road trip to Muscat is about 1,000 km through Thumrait, Haima and Adam, typically 10 to 12 hours of driving plus rest stops, across long stretches of desert with few services. Most travellers fly to Muscat International in under two hours instead. A one-way chauffeur transfer is possible and priced as a fixed fare on intercity transfers, but we recommend planning it as a two-day journey with an overnight halt.
Which vehicle to choose in Dhofar
An executive SUV is the default: it copes with wet mountain roads and carries a family's luggage. A business or Luxury Executive Sedan suits a couple on resort and city runs. Entry rules and travelling safely in Dhofar
Nationals of more than 100 countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and most EU states, can currently enter Oman visa-free for up to 14 days; others use the eVisa system. Rules change, so confirm your nationality on the Royal Oman Police site before you fly. Oman drives on the right, speed cameras are common and fines are strict.
Salalah itself is calm and orderly. The far west of Dhofar borders Yemen, and several governments advise against travel in the border zone; ordinary tourist routes around Salalah, Mughsail and Mirbat are well away from it. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.
