For most people staying in Playa, CUN is closer and has more flights. TQO makes sense if the flight times suit you or you are continuing south. Either way, the trip runs down Highway 307, and the fare is fixed whichever you choose.
Arriving at Cancun International: terminals and the pickup area
Cancun International is operated by ASUR. International flights from North America and Europe mostly use Terminals 3 and 4, with Terminal 2 carrying domestic and some international traffic, and Terminal 1 back in use in 2026; the terminal on your confirmation follows your flight. After immigration and customs, walk past the desks selling tours and taxis; your ride is already arranged. Mexican airports are federal zones, and passenger pickup there is reserved for operators holding the federal permit, so pre-booked transport meets you at the designated area for pre-arranged vehicles outside the terminal. That is the standard pickup. A name-board meet and greet is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Every flight is tracked. International arrivals get 60 minutes of included waiting from the actual landing, domestic flights 30 minutes and other pickups 15, then 15-minute blocks, which covers most immigration queues on Saturday changeover days.
Arriving at Tulum airport (TQO)
Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, known as TQO, opened in December 2023 south of Tulum. It has a single, compact terminal, and pre-arranged cars wait at the designated transport area outside arrivals. The run north to Playa passes Tulum, Akumal and Puerto Aventuras on Highway 307. The Tren Maya has a station at the airport and another in Playa del Carmen, but the Playa station is on the edge of town, so most travellers with luggage still take a car door to door.
Playa del Carmen neighbourhoods and resort areas
- Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue) is the pedestrian street a block from the beach, lined with shops and restaurants. Cars cannot drive on it; the chauffeur stops at the nearest cross street.
- Playacar, south of the ferry pier, is a gated area of all-inclusive resorts and villas with a golf course. Guards at the gate check your booking name.
- Punta Esmeralda and Coco Beach are the quieter northern beaches and condo districts.
- Mayakoba, about 10 minutes north, is a gated resort complex with the Fairmont, Rosewood, Banyan Tree and Andaz properties and El Camaleón golf course. Cars enter through a security gate.
- Playa Mamitas and Calle 12 are the beach club and nightlife zone.

The Cozumel ferry pier
Passenger ferries to Cozumel leave from the main pier at the end of Calle 1 Sur, next to Parque Fundadores, and take about 35 to 45 minutes to San Miguel on the island. The area around the pier is pedestrian and crowded, so the chauffeur drops you on the nearest street and helps with bags to the edge of the plaza. Highway 307 is a free, divided road with speed bumps (topes) and reduced limits through each town, and construction near the Tren Maya has slowed some stretches. The fare you are shown is fixed, whatever the traffic.
Choosing the right vehicle
A Standard Sedan or executive SUV suits a couple with two suitcases. Families with a stroller, golf bags or diving gear take a Standard Black SUV, and a group sharing a villa or a wedding party fits a Sprinter Van. Minicoaches and motorcoaches move whole guest lists between resort and venue. Every affiliate vehicle is four model years old or younger, and only Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley are accepted up to seven. When to book: seasons and events
December to April is high season, with the peaks at Christmas, New Year and US spring break in March. Sargassum seaweed can reach the beaches between roughly May and October; hotels post updates. Hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk from August to October, and flights and transfers are rescheduled when a storm threatens. FMM, Visitax and arrival paperwork
Flying in, you no longer need a paper FMM in most cases: the immigration officer or e-gate records your permitted stay digitally, and the fee is normally inside your airline fare. Arrivals by sea or land may still complete the FMM, which INM lets you fill in online. Quintana Roo also charges visitors a state tourism fee, Visitax, paid online before you leave the state, at the official Visitax site. Visitors from the US, Canada, the UK and the EU do not need a visa for tourism. Keep valuables out of sight in the terminal and only get into the car that matches your confirmation.
Child seats and cancellation
Child seats are available free of charge; add them when you book. The fare can be cancelled at no cost up to 72 hours before pickup; after that the fee is 10 % inside 72 hours, 50 % inside 48 hours and the full fare inside 24 hours or for a no-show.
