Kigali International Airport (KGL): arrival and pickup
KGL is at Kanombe, about 10 km east of the city centre, with a single passenger terminal. Vehicles pass a security check at the airport entrance, so our chauffeurs arrive with time to spare. Kigali Convention Centre and conference travel
The Kigali Convention Centre in Kimihurura, with its domed roof lit up at night, is the city's main venue for summits, association congresses and international meetings, with the Radisson Blu Hotel alongside. Districts: Kiyovu, Kacyiru, Kimihurura and Nyarutarama
The city spreads over hills. Kiyovu, near the centre, has older hotels and offices; Kacyiru holds many ministries, the Prime Minister's office and several embassies; Kimihurura is home to the convention centre and parliament. Nyarutarama, to the northeast, is the smart residential district with the golf course and many restaurants, and Remera has BK Arena and the rebuilt Amahoro Stadium. Visitors also go to the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. Hotels frequently used by business travellers include the Kigali Serena, the Kigali Marriott and the Radisson Blu. Umuganda, car-free days and other local rules
On the last Saturday of each month, Rwanda holds Umuganda, a national morning of community work, usually from about 08:00 to 11:00. Most traffic stops and roads are quiet except for authorised vehicles, so plan airport runs outside that window where you can; travellers with a flight are generally let through with their ticket. Kigali also holds regular car-free Sunday mornings on some roads. Rwanda bans single-use plastic bags, and they can be taken from you at the airport.
Rwanda drives on the right, unlike its neighbours Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, which drive on the left. Seat belts are compulsory for all passengers and motorcycle taxis are everywhere, so chauffeurs keep their speed down in town.
Gorilla trekking and national parks
The most requested long trip is to Volcanoes National Park for mountain gorilla trekking, starting from the park headquarters at Kinigi near Musanze. Trekking briefings begin early in the morning, so most visitors stay near the park the night before; a same-day trip means leaving Kigali well before dawn. Akagera National Park in the east offers classic savannah game drives. Both suit a full-day or multi-day city tours and day trips booking or an intercity transfer. Leaving Kigali: timing your airport run
For departures, aim to reach KGL about three hours before an international flight. Allow for the entrance security check, where vehicles are inspected and passengers sometimes step out, then terminal screening and check-in. From Nyarutarama or Kimihurura the drive is usually under half an hour outside peak times, but the approach roads slow down between about 07:00 and 09:00 and after 17:00. Returning from Musanze on the day of a flight is possible for an evening departure; leave the park area by early afternoon to keep a comfortable margin.
Vehicles for Kigali and upcountry roads
A Standard Sedan is fine inside the city. For Musanze, Akagera and Lake Kivu, an executive SUV gives better ground clearance and room for boots and camera bags. Events and dates by month
- February: the Tour du Rwanda cycling race usually passes through the city.
- From 7 April: Kwibuka, the annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. The first week is a national mourning period, and many events and entertainment are paused.
- May to June: Basketball Africa League games at BK Arena in recent seasons, and the Kigali International Peace Marathon, usually in this window.
- 4 July: Liberation Day (Kwibohora).
- Early August: Umuganura, the national harvest day.
Entry rules for Rwanda in 2026
Rwanda issues visas on arrival to all nationalities. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and La Francophonie member states have the visa fee waived for a 30-day visit, which covers visitors from the UK, Canada, India, France and much of Africa; others pay a fee on arrival or apply online in advance.
