Which airport serves Arusha?
Two airports matter. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), between Arusha and Moshi, handles the international flights from Europe, the Gulf and East Africa. It is about 50 km east of central Arusha, typically 60 to 80 minutes by road. Arusha Airport (ARK) at Kisongo, about 8 km west of town, is a small domestic airfield used by scheduled light-aircraft flights to the Serengeti airstrips, Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam. Many safaris end with a bush flight into ARK and an international departure from JRO the same evening; tell us both flights and the car links them.
How pickup works at Kilimanjaro International
JRO has a compact terminal. After immigration, where visas on arrival are processed, and baggage, exit to the arrivals forecourt. Your chauffeur waits at the designated pickup point for pre-booked cars and messages you with the vehicle and name. A name-board meet and greet inside the arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Flights are tracked, and waiting is timed to the actual landing: 60 minutes for international arrivals, 30 minutes for domestic flights, 15 minutes for other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. Safari handovers: how they work

Arusha as a conference city
Arusha is the headquarters of the East African Community and home to the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) and the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights. Kilimanjaro climbers and Moshi
Most Kilimanjaro climbs start from Moshi, about 80 km from Arusha and 45 to 60 minutes from JRO. A chauffeur can take a climbing team from the airport to a Moshi hotel for the briefing, then back to JRO after the descent. The Kilimanjaro Marathon, usually held in Moshi in late February or early March, fills hotels in both towns.
Road trips: Nairobi and the Kenyan border
Nairobi is about 270 km north, typically 5 to 6 hours including the Namanga one-stop border post. Vehicles need cross-border permits, so this trip may be planned as a handover at Namanga. Book it as an intercity transfer.
Driving conditions and safety
Tanzania drives on the left. The main roads around Arusha are paved, but speed bumps, police checkpoints, livestock and heavy trucks slow journeys, and night driving on rural roads is best avoided because of unlit vehicles and animals. The rainy seasons, roughly March to May and a shorter spell around November, make lodge tracks muddy. In town, petty theft and bag snatching occur; keep phones and cameras out of sight in traffic. Seasons in the north
- June to October: the long dry season, peak safari months and the busiest time for transfers.
- December to February: the calving season in the southern Serengeti, another busy period.
- March to May: the long rains, the quietest months.
Entry rules for Tanzania in 2026
Most visitors need a visa, available as an e-visa through Tanzania's immigration department or on arrival at JRO; the e-visa saves time in peak season. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your stay, and travellers from countries with yellow fever risk need a vaccination certificate. Child seats are free on request. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.
