Juanda International Airport: Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?
SUB is in Sedati, Sidoarjo Regency, about 20 km south of central Surabaya. It has two terminals, 15 to 20 minutes apart by the free airport shuttle:
- Terminal 1 handles most domestic flights.
- Terminal 2 handles international flights plus domestic services of some airlines, including Garuda Indonesia and Indonesia AirAsia.
We read the terminal from your flight number. Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area of that terminal; the chauffeur messages the plate after landing. The Waru-Juanda and Surabaya-Gempol toll roads carry most airport traffic, and the Trans-Java toll network links Surabaya to Malang, Semarang and Jakarta. Toll payment in Indonesia is cashless. - East Surabaya: Galaxy Mall, the ITS university campus and Kertajaya.
- Industrial belt: Rungkut and SIER in the southeast, Sidoarjo to the south and Gresik to the northwest.

Hotels and venues

Tanjung Perak port
The port of Tanjung Perak, run by Pelindo, handles container traffic, inter-island ferries and occasional cruise calls at the Gapura Surya Nusantara passenger terminal. Rail: Gubeng and Pasar Turi
Surabaya Gubeng serves the southern Java line towards Yogyakarta and Bandung, and Pasar Turi serves the northern line to Jakarta, about eight to nine hours on the fastest trains. Both stations have drop-off forecourts. Timetables are on KAI.
Mount Bromo and Malang by road
Bromo sunrise trips leave Surabaya around midnight or stay overnight near Cemoro Lawang; the last stretch to the viewpoints uses local 4x4 jeeps, which our car does not replace. Malang, cooler and about two hours away on the toll road, is a common day trip or a base. These drives are priced as intercity transfers; an executive SUV is the usual choice.
Airport departures: how early to leave
For an international departure from Terminal 2, leave central Surabaya at least three hours before the flight on weekdays, because the toll-road approach to Juanda backs up at the evening peak and near the Waru interchange. From West Surabaya add another 15 to 20 minutes. Early-morning departures move faster, and 45 minutes is usually enough from Tunjungan before 6:00.
Madura and the Suramadu Bridge
The Suramadu Bridge, about 5.4 km long and toll-free for cars since 2018, crosses the Madura Strait to Bangkalan. Day trips to Madura take the car over the bridge in 15 to 20 minutes from the northern end of the city.
Events by month
Surabaya marks its founding anniversary on 31 May with city events, and 10 November is Heroes' Day, commemorating the 1945 Battle of Surabaya, with ceremonies in the centre.
