Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE)
The international airport is at Ladyville, about 15 km north-west of Belize City. It has one terminal; after immigration and customs you walk out to the kerb, where standard pickup takes place at the designated pre-arranged pickup area. Once you land, a message arrives with the car's description and the chauffeur's name. A name-board greeting at the exit is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. Cruise passengers at Fort Street
Belize City's harbour is shallow, so large cruise ships anchor several miles offshore and tender passengers to the Fort Street Tourism Village on the city waterfront. Tender queues can take a while on a busy day, so the chauffeur tracks your messages rather than a fixed time. The cayes: San Pedro and Caye Caulker
Most visitors to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker cross by water taxi from Belize City: about 45 minutes to Caye Caulker and roughly 1.5 hours to San Pedro, or 15 to 20 minutes by domestic flight. We meet the boat or plane on the way back and take you to BZE for your flight, with a margin for departure procedures.
Inland: Cayo, Belmopan and the Maya sites
The George Price Highway runs west past the Belize Zoo to Belmopan, the capital, and on to San Ignacio and the Cayo District, gateway to Xunantunich, Caracol and the rainforest lodges of the Mountain Pine Ridge. Some lodge access roads are unpaved; an executive SUV is the sensible choice. The Philip Goldson Highway runs north to Orange Walk, for boat trips up the New River to Lamanai, and on to Corozal and the Mexican border near Chetumal. The Hummingbird Highway, often called one of the most scenic roads in Central America, cuts south-east from Belmopan to Dangriga, with Hopkins and Placencia beyond. Long runs are booked as intercity transfers.
Which vehicle?
An executive SUV is the most practical all-rounder in Belize, for luggage, rough lodge roads and rain. A Standard Sedan suits city and airport runs. A Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van carries a family or a dive group; minicoaches and motorcoaches move tour and cruise groups. Entry rules for 2026
US, Canadian, UK and EU citizens can visit Belize visa-free, normally for up to 30 days on arrival, extendable at immigration offices. Carry a passport valid for your whole stay and proof of onward travel. Air departure taxes are normally included in your ticket; land and sea departures pay fees at the exit point. The Belize Tourism Board publishes current requirements, and the airport publishes flight information.
Safety and the south side of the city
The US State Department rates Belize Level 2, exercise increased caution, but rates the south side of Belize City, from Haulover Creek south to Fabers Road, Level 3, reconsider travel, because of gang-related crime. Most visitors never need to go there: the airport road, the northern Fort George area, the cruise terminal and the water-taxi docks are the usual stops. Leaving Belize by air
Plan to reach BZE about two and a half to three hours before an international departure, particularly on Saturdays, when many US flights leave in a narrow midday window. From San Ignacio that means leaving Cayo about five hours before departure; from Placencia, many travellers take a short domestic flight to BZE instead of the three-hour drive. If you come back from the cayes on a water taxi, give us the boat time; the chauffeur meets you at the terminal in Belize City and drives straight to the airport. Luggage from a dive trip or fishing gear goes in the back of an SUV or van without fuss.
Driving in Belize
Belize drives on the right. Highways are mostly two-lane, with speed bumps at every village and occasional livestock on the road. Night driving outside the city is slower because of limited lighting. The rainy season, roughly June to November, can flood low roads in the south. The Belize dollar is fixed at two to one US dollar, and US currency is accepted almost everywhere.
