St. John's International Airport (YYT)
YYT has one terminal on the northwest edge of the city, about 6 km from downtown. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated commercial ground transportation area outside arrivals. Downtown, the harbour and the districts
Downtown St. John's climbs steeply from the harbour. Water Street, one of the oldest commercial streets in North America, runs along the waterfront with Duckworth Street parallel above it and George Street, the pub strip, between them. The painted row houses sometimes called Jellybean Row line the side streets. The Battery clings to the cliffs at the harbour mouth under Signal Hill, where Cabot Tower overlooks the Narrows; the hill is a national historic site managed by Parks Canada. Memorial University and the Health Sciences Centre sit north of downtown, and the offices of the offshore energy industry spread between downtown and the business parks near the airport. Streets are narrow and hilly, and parking downtown is tight, so the chauffeur often stops briefly at the door and waits around the corner.

Day trips and intercity drives on the Avalon

- Petty Harbour and the East Coast Trail: 20 minutes to the fishing village and trailheads.
- Argentia: about 130 km, roughly 1.5 hours, for the seasonal Marine Atlantic ferry to Nova Scotia.
- Trinity and the Bonavista Peninsula: about 260 km, around 3 hours.

Driving realities in St. John's
Driving is on the right, there are no tolls, and the Trans-Canada Highway begins here as Route 1, with the Outer Ring Road bypassing the city to the north. Downtown streets are steep and many are one-way. Weather changes fast: fog, strong winds, heavy snow and freezing rain are all common from November to April, and moose on rural highways make night driving slower outside the city. There is no passenger railway anywhere on the island; the Newfoundland Railway closed in 1988.
