Edmonton International Airport (YEG)
YEG sits in Leduc County, roughly 30 km south of downtown, on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway (Highway 2). Standard pickup is curbside on the arrivals level at the zone the airport assigns to pre-arranged vehicles; the airport's pickup map currently places them near Door 10, and your confirmation gives the current door. Downtown, the Ice District and the river valley
Downtown sits on the north rim of the North Saskatchewan River valley. The Ice District around Rogers Place, home of the Oilers, holds the JW Marriott Edmonton Ice District and new towers. Jasper Avenue runs past the Edmonton Convention Centre, built into the valley slope, and the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald on the valley edge. The Legislature grounds are just south-west. Across the river, Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue carry the restaurants and the Fringe venues, beside the University of Alberta campus. To the west, West Edmonton Mall has its own hotels and attractions; to the east, Sherwood Park and the refineries and petrochemical plants of Alberta's Industrial Heartland north-east of the city. The Edmonton EXPO Centre in the north-east hosts trade shows and agricultural events.
Energy, industry and the Nisku corridor
Much business travel is to the oil and gas service companies, fabricators and logistics firms clustered in Nisku and Leduc beside the airport, the Acheson industrial area west of the city, and the Heartland plants around Fort Saskatchewan. Project teams and engineers often land at YEG and go straight to a site office. Protective equipment usually cannot go in carry-on luggage, so an SUV with space for gear bags is popular. Winter driving in Edmonton
Driving is on the right. Winters are long and cold, with temperatures below minus 20 C common in January and heavy snow at times from November to March. Chauffeurs plan for icy roads, slower highway speeds and blowing snow on the QEII between the city and the airport. Anthony Henday Drive, a ring road around the city, and the Whitemud and Yellowhead highways are the main cross-town routes. Summer is the construction season, with lane closures on many arterial roads. An executive SUV with winter tires is our usual recommendation from late autumn to spring.

Rail and long-distance trips
VIA Rail's Canadian, the transcontinental train between Toronto and Vancouver, calls at Edmonton station in the north-west of the city a couple of times a week; schedules are on VIA Rail. Most long trips are by road. Calgary, with YYC, is about three hours south on the QEII, and Jasper National Park is four to four and a half hours west on the Yellowhead Highway. Departing YEG: timing the ride
From downtown, most travellers leave about 2 hours before a domestic flight and 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours before a US or international one, adding time in snow. US-bound passengers clear US preclearance at YEG after security, which adds a second queue. The chauffeur drops at the departures level. For early flights from the southern suburbs, Leduc or Nisku, the drive can be under 15 minutes, which is one reason many project crews stay near the airport.
