Buying online before the trip saves a stop at the gate on a busy summer morning. The pass is a Parks Canada fee, separate from the car.

Lake Louise and the Moraine Lake road
Lake Louise is 58 km west of Banff. The lakeshore car park is paid and fills early from late spring to autumn, so a chauffeur drop-off at the lake, with pickup at an agreed time, avoids the parking hunt. Moraine Lake is different: since 2023 its access road has been closed to personal vehicles, and access is by Parks Canada shuttle, licensed commercial bus operators or for guests of the lodge. A common plan is a car to the Lake Louise Park and Ride at the ski resort for a booked Parks Canada shuttle seat, then a car back to Banff. Three resorts share the Banff area. Mt Norquay is about 10 minutes above town. Sunshine Village's gondola base is roughly 20 minutes west. Lake Louise Ski Resort is about 45 minutes away on the Trans-Canada. The ski season usually runs from November to May. An executive SUV takes two or three skiers with bags, and a Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van holds a family or a group with ski bags without folding seats. Icefields Parkway to Jasper
Highway 93 North runs 230 km from Lake Louise to Jasper past the Columbia Icefield. In winter there is no fuel or food along it, and Parks Canada requires winter tires or chains from 1 November to 1 April. It is a full-day trip with stops at Bow Lake, Peyto Lake and the Athabasca Glacier; book it as a day trip through city tours and day trips or as a one-way transfer to Jasper.
Road conditions in the mountains
Traffic drives on the right. The Trans-Canada through the park is a divided, fenced highway with a 90 km/h limit, and wildlife overpasses; elk and bighorn sheep still appear near town. Weather changes quickly, and closures after heavy snow or collisions are posted on Alberta 511. There are no tolls. Rocky Mountaineer trains call at the Banff station in the summer season; a car can meet the train like any other pickup, with 15 minutes included.
Choosing a vehicle for Banff
An executive SUV is the usual choice for the airport run, with all-weather capability and room for luggage. A business or Luxury Executive Sedan works in summer for one or two travellers.
