Chauffeur service in Medellin: MDE airport transfers, black cars and day trips

The first thing to know: MDE is not in Medellin

Medellin's international airport sits in Rionegro, on a high plateau east of the city at about 2,100 m, while Medellin itself lies in the Aburra Valley at about 1,500 m. Every airport transfer climbs or descends roughly 600 m on mountain roads, and fog can settle on the plateau in the early morning. The distance from El Poblado is typically 30 to 40 km depending on your start point, so this is a real transfer, not a quick hop.

Tunel de Oriente or Las Palmas: which road the chauffeur takes

Since 2019 the fastest route has been the Tunel de Oriente, a toll tunnel of about 8.2 km that cuts under the mountains between the valley and the plateau. Via the tunnel, the drive from El Poblado to the terminal usually takes 35 to 50 minutes. The older route climbs the Avenida Las Palmas with switchbacks and views over the city, typically 45 to 75 minutes, and is used when the tunnel approach is congested or closed. Allow extra time on Friday evenings and at the end of holiday weekends, when traffic from the eastern towns returns.

Airport pickup at Jose Maria Cordova

MDE has one passenger terminal. International arrivals pass Migracion Colombia and customs, then exit to the arrivals level, where standard pickup is curbside at the pre-arranged pickup area; the chauffeur messages the spot and plate. Meet and greet in the hall with a name board is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Flights are tracked, with 60 minutes of waiting from landing on international arrivals and 30 minutes on domestic arrivals, then 15-minute blocks. Travel times for common Medellin routes

Where business travellers stay and meet

El Poblado has most international hotels, the Milla de Oro office corridor on Avenida El Poblado and the restaurant blocks of Provenza and Parque Lleras. Laureles-Estadio is flatter and residential, near the Atanasio Girardot stadium. Ciudad del Rio and the Parque Explora area hold newer offices and museums, and Envigado and Sabaneta extend the city south. Up on the plateau, Llanogrande and the Rionegro area are full of country houses, event estates and companies close to the airport. A day of meetings across two or three of these areas suits the hourly chauffeur service, with the car waiting between stops.

Plaza Mayor, stadiums and the events calendar

Plaza Mayor Medellin, next to the Alpujarra administrative centre, is the city's main convention and exhibition venue. The Atanasio Girardot stadium hosts Atletico Nacional and Independiente Medellin, and the old La Macarena bullring now stages concerts.

• July: Colombiamoda, the fashion trade fair at Plaza Mayor, usually late in the month.
• August: the Feria de las Flores, usually early August, with the Desfile de Silleteros, the flower-carrier parade from Santa Elena. Many central streets close on parade day.
• September: the Fiesta del Libro y la Cultura book fair, usually mid-month.
• December: the Alumbrados, the city's Christmas lights along the river and in the parks, with heavy evening traffic.

Pico y placa and other driving rules

Colombia drives on the right. Medellin applies pico y placa, a weekday restriction on private vehicles by the last digit of the plate during set hours, and the rules change periodically; the affiliate assigns a vehicle permitted to circulate at your trip time. The valley traps traffic on the Avenida Regional and Las Vegas corridors at peak hours, and hill roads in El Poblado are steep. The city's Metro de Medellin and Metrocable lines are worth a ride for visitors, but luggage, meetings and airport runs are easier by car.

Vehicles for Medellin

A Standard Sedan covers most airport runs for one or two people. An executive SUV handles luggage, the mountain roads to Guatape and families better. A Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van carries a team to a Llanogrande offsite, and minicoaches move conference groups. See the fleet and rates; every vehicle is four model years old or younger. Day trips out of the valley

Guatape and the granite Piedra del Penol are the classic full day, about two hours each way; book city tours and day trips so the chauffeur waits while you climb the rock or take a boat on the reservoir. Santa Fe de Antioquia, a colonial town reached through the Tunel de Occidente, is closer and warmer. Coffee farms in the Antioquia hills can be combined with either.

Security and entry notes

Visitors from the US, Canada, the UK and the EU generally need no visa for a tourist stay in Colombia; the free Check-MIG form is on the official Migracion Colombia site. The US State Department and other governments advise increased caution in Colombia, and embassies have warned about robberies and drugging linked to dating apps and chance meetings in nightlife areas. Pre-booked cars with a named chauffeur, rather than street hails at night, are a sensible habit. Armoured SUVs are available on request after a risk assessment through secure transportation.

Other Colombian cities
