Madrid-Barajas: which terminal, and where is pickup?
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas is operated by Aena and has two separate terminal areas that are several kilometres apart:
- T1, T2 and T3, joined buildings on the south-west side, used by many European, American and low-cost airlines.
- T4 and its satellite T4S, the newer complex used by Iberia, the oneworld alliance and others. T4S handles many long-haul and non-Schengen flights and is linked to T4 by an automated underground train.
A free airside shuttle bus runs between the two areas, but a chauffeur needs your exact terminal, which is why the flight number matters. Passport control at Barajas: EES and ETIAS
Spain is part of Schengen. Travellers from the UK, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia pass border control on arrival, mostly at T4S or the international areas of T1. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: non-EU short-stay visitors give fingerprints and a facial image the first time they enter the Schengen area, and each later entry and exit is recorded electronically. ETIAS has not started; the EU has withdrawn its earlier late-2026 target and says a launch date will be published months in advance. On a first visit, allow extra time at the border; the international waiting allowance is designed for that.
Madrid's ZBE: what the low-emission rules mean for a car
The whole municipality of Madrid is a low-emission zone (Zona de Bajas Emisiones), part of the city's Madrid 360 plan. Since 1 January 2025, cars without a DGT environmental label that are not registered in Madrid may not drive anywhere in the city. Inside it, two special-protection zones apply stricter access rules: Distrito Centro, the historic core around Sol, Gran Vía, Malasaña and La Latina, and Plaza Elíptica in the south. The rules and exemptions are published on Madrid 360. For passengers, the practical effect is that the chauffeur will use the permitted access to the centre, and some pedestrian streets around Sol and the Plaza Mayor cannot be reached by car at all; the pickup point is then the nearest street that can.
Madrid drives on the right. The M-30 inner ring, much of it in tunnels along the Manzanares, and the outer M-40 and M-50 rings carry most traffic. The radial toll motorways (R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5) and the AP-6 towards Segovia are tolled, while the A-roads are free.
The Castellana, Salamanca and Madrid's business districts
The Paseo de la Castellana is Madrid's corporate spine. From south to north:
- Recoletos and Colón: banks, law firms and embassies close to the Prado.
- Salamanca: Serrano and Ortega y Gasset for luxury retail, private banking and family offices.
- AZCA: the financial district around Nuevos Ministerios, beside the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

Atocha and Chamartín: high-speed rail pickups
Madrid Puerta de Atocha is the main terminal for high-speed trains to Barcelona, Seville, Málaga and Valencia; Barcelona is about 2 h 30 to 3 h away by the fastest services. Chamartín-Clara Campoamor in the north serves the lines to the north-west and some trains through the Atocha-Chamartín tunnel. Both are busy, and pickups use the station's designated areas; the confirmation gives the exact spot. Planning an outbound flight from Madrid
