Which Barajas terminal do you need?
Barajas is split into two complexes that are too far apart to walk:
- T1, T2 and T3, connected buildings on the western side. Many European carriers, low-cost airlines and SkyTeam members use them.
- T4 and T4S, the large terminal designed by Richard Rogers and Antonio Lamela, with its wave-shaped timber roof. Iberia, British Airways and other oneworld airlines operate here. T4S is the satellite for most non-Schengen flights, linked to T4 by an underground automated train.
A free shuttle bus runs between the two complexes. Enter your flight number and the chauffeur is sent to the correct arrivals level. If you land at T4S, add 10-15 minutes for the train to the main T4 building before you reach baggage reclaim.

Madrid runs a low-emission zone covering the whole municipality, with stricter rules in the Distrito Centro, and roads such as the M-30 and A-2 are congested at commuter peaks, roughly 08:00-10:00 and 18:00-20:30. Arrivals around lunchtime are often quicker.

What your Barajas fare covers
The fixed fare includes the car, the chauffeur, flight tracking and the waiting allowance, with gratuity billed separately at actual cost and added to the booking. Once included waiting is used, time is charged in 15-minute blocks. Child seats are supplied without charge on request; give the child's age so the right seat is fitted before the car reaches the airport.
Train and metro alternatives from Barajas
Metro Line 8 runs from T4 and from the T2 station (serving T1-T3) to Nuevos Ministerios in about 15-20 minutes, where you can change for the rest of the network. Cercanias commuter trains leave from T4 for Chamartin, Nuevos Ministerios and Atocha. Details are on Renfe. These are good choices for light travellers. A car suits addresses away from the stations, luggage, late-night arrivals and anyone going straight to a meeting.
High-speed rail connections
Madrid is the centre of Spain's high-speed network. Travellers flying in and continuing to Seville, Barcelona or Valencia often go straight from Barajas to Madrid Atocha or Chamartin for an AVE or other high-speed service. The car can be booked to the station entrance, and cities such as Seville and Valencia have their own chauffeur pages for the other end of the journey.
Departures to MAD
Allow two hours before a Schengen departure and three before a long-haul one, and add time for the T4S train if your flight leaves from the satellite. Morning departures after 07:00 meet commuter traffic, so pickups from the Castellana are usually set 45-60 minutes ahead of the time you want to be at the terminal.
Corporate, diplomatic and event travel
Madrid hosts embassies, ministries, bank headquarters and big fairs such as FITUR, usually in January. Corporate accounts include monthly invoicing and traveller profiles, and the government and diplomatic team handles protocol-sensitive visits. Late arrivals, early departures and match days
Barajas stays busy late into the evening, with transatlantic departures and arrivals from Latin America clustered in the early morning. A 06:00 landing from Mexico City or Bogota usually means a fast drive into town, because the city has not woken up yet, while a 19:00 arrival meets the evening peak on the A-2. Football also shapes the traffic. The Santiago Bernabeu stands on the Paseo de la Castellana, about 20-25 minutes from the airport, and the Riyadh Air Metropolitano is east of the centre, about 15-20 minutes away. On match nights the roads around both grounds close or slow for hours before kick-off, so hotels on the Castellana can take longer to reach than usual. If you are flying in for a match or a concert, book the car to your hotel first and allow a buffer before the event.
