Tenerife South or Tenerife North: which airport are you using?
Tenerife has two airports on opposite sides of the island, and the right transfer depends on which one your ticket names. Check the three-letter code before you book.
- Tenerife South (TFS), Reina Sofía, in Granadilla de Abona, handles most international and holiday flights, including the bulk of flights from the UK and northern Europe. It is the natural gateway for the resort coast in the south-west.
- Tenerife North (TFN), Ciudad de La Laguna, sits on a plateau above Santa Cruz and La Laguna. It carries most inter-island flights to the other Canary Islands and many flights to mainland Spain. It is often cloudier and cooler than the south.
Arriving at one airport and staying near the other is common, and the transfer between the two is a regular booking. Both airports are run by Aena.

How pickup works at both airports
At TFS and TFN the chauffeur waits at the airport's designated area for pre-booked private transfers, outside arrivals, and messages you the exact spot and the vehicle plate after landing. A name-board meet and greet inside the arrivals hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. Flights are tracked, and included waiting is 60 minutes from landing for international arrivals, 30 minutes for domestic flights, which includes flights from mainland Spain and the other islands, and 15 minutes for other pickups. After that, waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks.
Passport control, EES and island customs
The Canary Islands are part of Spain and of the Schengen area. Travellers arriving from outside Schengen, such as UK visitors on the main routes into TFS, pass the EU Entry/Exit System, which has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. Non-EU nationals on a first visit give fingerprints and a facial image rather than getting a passport stamp. ETIAS, the online authorisation for visa-exempt travellers, is not in force yet and has not launched yet. One island-specific point: the Canaries are outside the EU VAT area, so duty-free allowances for tobacco and alcohol apply, and customs checks can take place even on flights from the Spanish mainland.

The resort south: Costa Adeje, Las Américas and Los Cristianos
Most visitors stay on the dry south-west coast. Costa Adeje, with La Caleta, Playa del Duque and Fañabé, has the island's largest concentration of five-star hotels, including the Bahía del Duque and the Royal Hideaway Corales. Further along the coast, The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama sits on its own estate near Guía de Isora. Playa de las Américas is livelier, and Los Cristianos is the port for ferries to La Gomera. Villas in the hills above Adeje often have steep, narrow access roads, so mention the address details when booking so the right vehicle is sent.
Santa Cruz, La Laguna and the green north
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital and the business centre, home to government offices, the Auditorio de Tenerife by Santiago Calatrava and the Hotel Mencey. La Laguna, a short drive uphill, is a UNESCO World Heritage old town with the university; a tram links it to Santa Cruz. On the north coast, Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava, with its balconied mansions, draw visitors who prefer greener, cooler scenery, and Garachico sits by old lava pools further west.
Santa Cruz cruise terminal
Cruise ships berth at the Port of Santa Cruz, a short walk from Plaza de España and the city centre, with Tenerife a frequent call on autumn-to-spring Canary Islands itineraries. From the ship, a chauffeur can take you to TFN in about 20 minutes, to TFS in around 50, or on a timed island circuit that returns well before all-aboard. Teide, Masca and a day across the island
Teide National Park surrounds Spain's highest peak at 3,715 metres, and the cable car climbs to near the summit; permits are needed to walk the final section. Roads into the park climb above 2,000 metres, and the temperature can drop sharply, so bring a layer. Other favourite chauffeured days are the Masca valley and village, on a very narrow, winding road best done in a sedan or SUV; the cliffs of Los Gigantes; and the Anaga mountains north of Santa Cruz. Driving on Tenerife
Traffic drives on the right, and there are no motorway tolls on the island. The TF-1 runs along the south and east coasts from Santa Cruz past TFS to Adeje, and the TF-5 links Santa Cruz with TFN and the north coast. The TF-5 through La Laguna is regularly congested at the morning and evening peaks. Mountain roads to Teide and Masca are slow, with hairpins and, at weekends, many cyclists.
Vehicles for the island
A Standard Sedan suits a couple on a TFS transfer; an executive SUV takes golf bags for Abama or Golf Costa Adeje, and families with free child seats.
